It's actually a mandatory work thing. Our CEO says if every employee doesn't beat T5 by the end of the quarter he's going to fire us.

You do realize linkshells max out at about 128 people but FCs can have around 500 right?

That's hardly the only use case. My guild has two other guilds that we are close friends with. We frequently build groups to tackle content including members from the other two. Using a link shell for intercommunication doesn't work due to the ls size limit. A combined FC alliance chat is the best solution. Not everything is about maxing the 512 limit.
