As others have said, don't join the one that spam invites to random players. If they're not giving you any kind of idea what their FC is like or want to know what kind of a person you are before joining, you can be pretty sure you won't find what you're looking for there.
Check your server forums for FC recruitment posts and see if there's something that looks good to you. Or if you meet some nice and friendly people in game, ask if their FC is recruiting. Being in FC is very useful because you will get help for the fights and dungeons you'll be doing and answers to your questions about game mechanics. And also free company buffs.

I finally joined a FC yesterday, after ignoring mass invites from "that one FC on cactuar" every 5 minutes for a week. So far it's been pleasant. Everyone talking, doing groups together. No obnoxiously long << tag >> on the end of my name.

Jumping on the band wagon. What everyone else said. But honestly its a hit or miss scenario. Since their really isn't XP parties required to level, and since DF pulls from all servers if needed, or unless you join a random FATE party and hit it off with a group of people that invite you to join their FC theirs really no prior P2P engagement to motivate you to join a certain FC. So then all that's left are random invites-shout invites-or checking forums for a FC.
You should def look into different FC,s until you find the perfect match . Cuz it actually is part of the gameplay......its a MMORPG ffs. Lol
Oh and.. you make friends to do missions dungeons whatever together... anything to avoid DF
