It's not so much of a need is that the people who buy gil are simply too lazy to put the minimum amount of effort to earn the gil. Even if SE were to send a certain amount of gil into the mail each 30 days you subscribe, some people would still turn to disreputable 3rd party sources to purchase gil. Why? Because they feel they can use it to satiate their desire for instant gratification.

Not the best mailing system ever, but it's not really something that needs to be changed. Only thing I hate is the character limit.

Honestly that's a limitation they could easily overcome by having any characters on the same account be automatically added as a mailTo option.

I think it's like this so you have to add RMT for them to mail gil to you.

the system is also in place so you can't trade between alt characters making characters and accounts forced to have to friend each other to trade money. (basically a way to see where the money is going)

Besides, quite a few games have free mailing services in games, and guess what? They have RMT too, yet it's taken care of better unlike in this game.

Well it would be nice if they added so we could send mail to FC/LS members w/o having to add them to the friend list

Not that I support this but if SE added something in so people could buy gil from them, I wounder how fast the RMT crap would drop if SE set the price to $0.01

Given the amount of spam, I'm grateful that people I don't have as friends can't mail me, except for two cases:

(1) People in my Free Company
(2) People on my account (wait, that's ME!)

I don't allow RMT accounts into my FC, and I do not allow RMT accounts onto my own account. I see no reason to be protected from these two cases.
