I'm fairly certain they have said they are going to make food easier to understand by having more information be shown on food descriptions. With the changes to stats (lowering how much points you have overall and at the same time making points more potent) I'd imagine that you should be within range to get a strong bonus from at least one piece of food and having the effects become apparent.
Personally I think I like how food works currently but just requires those changes. It keeps more food (and thus more low and mid-level crafters) more relevant since more serious players will be searching for the best food for their level, but anyone is able to grab what they can find in a hurry and still have it be useful. FF11's food stats are static and there are only like 6 food items anyone ever uses for various reasons and I've always thought it was kinda lame.
Edit: Also FYI, food only depends upon your base stats in the Allocation screen, so you don't have to worry about your stats changing with gear messing up your bonus.
