i know nothing about retainers ,never used them at all.....all i have done is levelled my main character,done fetes and leves,dungeons,not done any gathering / crafting..and done my job quests..now im lvl 50 and slighty confused by all of ffx1v's style of play?
You should probably start exploring other classes, gathering, crafting, etc. - space out your efforts, or you'll find yourself suddenly out of content one day. Either way, go get your retainers. If nothing else you'll appreciate being able to actually sell things and get some cash for them.
Anyway, XIV isn't really that confusing. Your level is capped, but your gear keeps progressing. There's a lot to do, you have a large amount of freedom to tackle it the way you want. Your overall goal is to keep raising your iLvl so you can tackle harder and harder challenges, and whether or not you get drops, you're always getting currencies that'll help you improve.
The grind continues, so to speak - it's just not measured with a classic experience bar anymore.

i also need to read up on retainers too,never used them or knew what their purpose is/was...this rate i can see me going back to world of warcraft in december when their new lvl 100 expansion pack comes out lol(joke).
Generally, retainers let you store your items as well as sell them to the market board for you. To get them, talk to a retainer advocate NPC at any of the state's trading area, you will be brought to a character creation screen (to create the retainer's look) and you can interact with them via the summoning bell.
A bonus quest allows you to unlock ventures, a feature that allows your retainer to go on an adventure to gather certain items for you depending on the class selected.
