Well first I clear 1 pane of my inventory because I did fates at bronze lake for nearly 6 hours yesterday and didn't realize that the atma's take an inventory spot. I read through the chat log and realized that after clearing some fates it said "Unable to obtain Item". I'm assuming that was the atma that I couldn't receive cause of a full inventory.
After that I considered uninstalling from my rage but then I just went to sleep. My ritual now is just making sure I have inventory space!
I ran around solo with my choco out and spiritbonding raptorskin gear. I also set my free teleport to the zone I was in. First was La Noscea then Shroud then Thanalan. 5 of the 12 dropped with in the first 3 fates. Longest was West Thanalan. That took 2 hrs. I was much luckier than most. Praise RNGesus!
I either put up a PF or put DF to work, then casually do FATEs while I wait. If I get an Atma, great! If I don't, oh well then hopefully I'll get it next time. In other words, I don't stress about it.
In seriously concerned that some of these Atma farmers should see a therapist for stress management. The way some of them obsess and get angry at the farm is just plain unhealthy.
My ritual: only farm for 3 hours max per day I login. Hasn't failed me yet. Going for atma #8 tomorrow night.
I turn off the game's BGM and put on "Turn Down For What" by DJ Snake and put it on repeat. I do my dailies and treasure maps and things and if I see a FATE, I run over to it and then keep going on about my way.
That and if I stay in a zone for longer than 2 hours without seeing an Atma, I go do something else like a dungeon, check my retainer ventures, or sit at the FC house for a while, then go back. And no, I don't usually join FATE parties, I just roll stag so I can come and go as I please.
For the most part, I reciprocate what Skyhound said above, not stress about it and just do it as it is something to do solo during downtime. I have 11 of the 12 Atmas since last week. It's been working for me so far.
Be out of party and in queue for dungeon. It worked! 13 hours in party--->no atma. You can see why I feel this way? =D

I farmed like 2 hours per day at most. The trick is to not burn yourself out trying to get an Atma; if you're bored just go do something else. Just take it with ease and don't give it such a high priority.
I dont think about it. I dont even feel like i am playing when doing fates. I listen to music, watch tv shows, chat.... and sometimes "oh it popped", change area and start again.
