Sounds a lot like a warlock from WOW.

For a fairly new player I would recommend Archer/Bard. I don't have much personal experience but they seem easiest to play as, being able to move and still do damage, and also as a ranged you will have a good view to observe what exactly is going on as you progress in difficulty, and if you decide to do some other role later on you will have that experience to fall back on.
That being said, there is significant emphasis on cross class skills as you approach end game. Bard uses cross class skills from Pugilist and Lancer, so you can really level a few classes to 15 or so and see how you like it, those skills will come in handy later on.
You will probably want to avoid DRG and MNK due to their potential being greatest when they are not in front of a monster. The positioning can be a bit of a nuisance if you do not have a tank with you to keep the monster occupied. You might still consider a tank, even if you don't intend to do dungeons with it, due to their durability which can come in very handy during FATE events (which you will probably be doing a lot of) when you are alone. Warrior has a good mix of damage, durability, and self-healing which makes it a nice melee choice for solo work.
I'd recommend Arcanist -> Summoner also. They have pets that can tank for solo content. Since most of their damage is DoTs and pets can/will continue to act on their own, if you go afk for a minute it's possible no one will notice.
on topic: In my opinion, BLM is the job for you. It is easy to use, and in the long run can be a powerful mage, with a few CC magic to help on rough situations.
off topic: Have you tried Free To Play MMOs? There are a few easy going games out there. Think about that after you play a little. Because paying $13-$15 monthly to play a little sometimes is rough, depending on the income. But other than that, FFXIV is extremely casual friendly in almost every aspect of the game. I play around 1-3 hours daily, if able, mostly solo, and I have yet to find a wall, content wise.
Welcome to Eorzea!
Currently, I think I'm going to try warrior, bard, black mage. Then make my decision after that. My question is, what level should I play until to base my decision. I have limited play time, so I don't want it to be too high. I'm thinking in the 10-15 range.
Thank you!
I tried SWKOTOR free mmo, played for about a month, and hated it. I have a good job, and I can certainly spare 15 bucks a month or whatever the price is. The thing that attracted to me to this game is the way the class/job system works. I like the idea that I have to level a class to 30, and a sub class to 15 to unlock my main advanced class.
