I currently don't like FATES, however I don't think this solution will appeal to me personally.
I'll probably only do the HM/HNM only once just to see content.
However, I don't care for vanity items or rare furniture I'll likely not repeat it.

I like the idea of vanity gear and furnishings dropping from the NMs. The issue I had with them in XI was how heavily they were camped. I said in another thread that they could possibly do away with camping issues if the enemy had a chance to spawn at ANY location on a particular map, and to find the enemy would purely be based on luck, and would keep people from just standing there killing place holders.
I honestly don't get the FATE hate for things like this. I find it MUCH better than the pain that was XI or similar in other games. If they aren't like FATEs, they would be camped by bots, auto-tagged before anyone could get near, or would be something you'd have to camp for hours or days, which honestly isn't remotely fun for me. Especially if loot is tied to them, and usually that loot becomes non-optional for various reasons. FATEs work, i have yet to see a good argument over why they are bad, and if something like Odin wasn't a FATE, it would still be as overloaded, or worse as people would fight for the tag.
I've seen suggestions that they be a random pop for guildleves, and that could be cool though too.
Nah it's not hate towards FATE. I love the FATE concept, it has its goods and bads.
For NM/HNM when you have 40-50 people all attacking at once like Odin/Behemoth there is no challenge to it, some can just stand there spamming skills and get good amount of enmity for the medals and rewards, that's the part I don't think is right with this open world NM/HNM they have right now through FATE. All those other fates where you have to save villagers and or troops take down the dragon, those have a meaning and they are fun, I love those FATEs, it's just, for me personally, that doesn't seem like the right approach for NM/HNM, that is all.
I would love to see something like this. Drops akin to what we've seen so far with Odin/Behemoth and other fancy vanity stuff, minions even.

Why must everything come back to blaming PS3? You do understand FFXI was on PS2 and had loads of NM's & HNM's.
PS3 does have memory limitation and makes it harder for the devs around the UI interface but shouldn't affect this type of stuff since they already got NM/HNM through FATE & Guild Leve system working, it's just matter of moving NM/HNM over to guild leve type feature (just the lockout so others can't hit to help kill)
I'd do it.
FATE doesn't excite anyone even if the monster is a cool NM or even a sort of HNM. It's FATE which is synonymous with "faceroll" "leveling content" and "trash" for many players.
I would love to have a variation of the hunt log difficult & rare monsters for a Lv. 50 character to defeat. Even wandering NMs that only drop a title would be welcome!
Personally I think a system that involved you and your Free Company challenging Leve-esque duties would be perfect - fight with a gigantic HNM somewhere in the open world - that would be great and exciting especially if it involved some progression that allowed you to take on ever more difficult fights for gear or other rare items while still maintaining at least some exclusivity for Free Companies/Linkshells/Self-organizing players.
I really love the Treasure Map system as well - I hope they expand it and use it to model more serious open-world content!
Bring back Skirmish!!

Such is the unfortunate side-effect of something being attacked by everyone; even Twintania would die in seconds if you just threw enough people at it. On the other hand, you could reasonably do both: Have the HNM spawn in a FATE, let it die in seconds and people get their medals for it. Getting a sufficient enough rank (ie Gold) rewards you an item that you can turn into a Guildleve NPC that gives you a levequest to fight the HNM again with a full party for the real prizes.
This way, you can't camp it (because it's an HNM FATE and thus randomly appears) and it remains a difficult fight because the REAL challenge is the levequest.
That would work, but some HNM's like Odin for example, I don't want to see Odin getting taken down by 50 players, it just doesn't feel right. Maybe have a FATE that leads up to that levequest but don't have the HNM spawn in the FATE. Some FATE's makes sense to having them like that Dragon FATE in Coerthas, only downside for me on that one is that the players can use the cannons lol. Give different roles for everyone to do during that FATE.
This is same reason I don't want to see Gilgamesh to be in FATE, if they put Gilgamesh, iconic character from FF series into a FATE it's going to kill the Gilgamesh image I have :( But then again, that's just me, other people may be totally OK with stuff like that.
