No materia slots in end-game gear..

Allowing someone to customize their gear to their play-style (maybe i'd like to add more skillspeed, or even parry just for those moments the MT is down), actually giving crafting a purpose again (thinking about how much gil I wasted on supplies and gear while leveling my carpenter and completing that crafting log of mythical items that barely anyone buys still ticks me off), and stimulating the market with materia sales (playing the game more to spiritbond gear) seems like a winner to me.

It was no problem in 1.0
And do you know why? Spirit Bound parties. If the demand for materia is high, people would buy (or craft) more level45+ gear, form parties to spirit bound them, convert them to materia and then sell them or use them for themselves.
If 30 Tier III materia is already too much for you, be happy that there is not the old system where also the gear got destroyed if it failed
