I'm sorry, but what? I have had 0 problems in any game without duty finder.

Congratulations, you're not a 'casual' player that may or may not be new to mmos, playing a new mmo with 0 friends to help you out!
I could shout for days, days in 1.0 and not get three people to do easy Ifrit. That may be acceptable to you (nothing builds community like seeing the same sad sack shouting for days, I guess), but for the majority of the 'casual' playerbase (you know, the playerbase that pays the bills), they don't want to pay a sub for a game where you can't complete content because no one wants to play with you in an mmo.
At that point you all should have known, IT'S A TRAP.

Indeed. As much as I appreciate the gil font that duty roulette offers, open world activity pre-endgame was actually very high due to the now ignored fate farming. Within the next month I expect fates to have become a permanent blight on the open world, while part finder will never generate enough interest because of duty finder.
Removing duty finder entirely is too extreme a solution, but they'll need to swing rewards back in the direction of open world gaming at some point soon.
I really believe FFXI would have been in a stronger state had a DF-type system been in place from the beginning. I'm certainly glad Yoshida & Co. had the foresight not to listen to those who probably belonged to exclusive endgame cliques and put in Duty Finder so more people can get things done. It has its flaws but I'm glad its there.
What green hat girl said.
When I was trying to get into Tam Tara for the story, I shouted, messaged people nearby who looked interested, and generally made a fool of myself. In the end, I just had to wait the 45 minutes for the DF to find me a party. I wouldn't have got one otherwise.
If it wasn't for the Duty Finder, I would not have progressed as far as I have.
Agreed 100%. There were so many great aspects of ffxi, but if you had anything less then 2+ hours to play you might as well not even log in. You weren't going to get anything productive done. Shouting for hours was just painful.
I have gotten some pretty poor groups/poor attitudes via duty finder. Non DF groups are usually much better. That is incentive enough sometimes to avoid DF.
They should really make a system where someone can start a group for specific content, then others can look at that list and sign up for it. Maybe call it Party Finder or something....
