Why do Goblins wear Masks?

Rather than starting a new topic, let me hijack this one.

It appears as if Goblins do not follow the same naming conventions as their FFXI counterparts. In that game, "-ix" suffixes named males, and "-ox" suffixes named females. In the journal entry for "The Things We Do for Cheese," it is confirmed that Brayflox is, indeed, a male: "....However, something appears to have befallen Brayflox and his people,..."

*shruggity shrug* I suppose I just find it funny that they borrow so much from FFXI's Goblins, but not that.

I thought it was related to mining, welding and bomb making but there are some very interesting lore infos in this thread, I like it.

And Sweetnix Rosycheeks, in Limsa thingie, is likewise referred to as female by the people involved in her questline.

Most quests refer to Brayflox as a female. Any references to "-ox" goblins as male are simple, correctable errors on the Localization team's part, as Japanese only very rarely uses gendered pronouns.

Yeah, Ferne confirmed ages ago that Brayflox is indeed a woman and that it was a simple typo that identified her as otherwise in the Duty Finder (this mistake was actually corrected in a patch).

I'm playing through FFXIV Dawntrail, doing some class crafting quests. I mobbie named Halnaruk is helping out with the cooking/alchemy quests and they were offered a juice to drink. They said

" Propergood Mobbies never bareface in public"

20 + years of Gobbies and Mobbies and they always have their masks.
