The issue of the 8 sets of gear is a good point so I have made a separate thread here about the idea of set bonuses? Maybe this could answer the question of why get AF sets should Square Enix think it a good idea.

I agree with you guys they do look a lot cooler and I can dye them to make them look badass. Maybe after I get all 8 to 50 and get the offhands done, I will do it slowly. I can't pull myself together to buy Tier 3 materia for 25k a pop for 35% failure rate so I bond all my gear myself which takes time. On the plus side after I'm done with offhands I only have 40 pieces left to meld (5 main parts * 8 proffesions). Sigh, i don't know how you guys find time.
Just finished my 5th profession last night. Cul (37), Arm (15), and Bsm (15) left.

Here's an idea. Why not meld the non class specific gear first? I started with my belt, then necklace, earrings and wrist. I only need to optimize the rings now and I am done. Once those are done ill fill up the basic slot of items first. And see how far I can get with that. No need to waste money on 1 specific class.
And tbh, I agree with the OP, the class specific gear just makes it feel like more of an accomplishment. And like I said we have enough non specific gear to meld. Food, fc bonus might help you get that last bit anyways.

If you are talking to me, Zeronic, I did do the non-class specific gear first. I did belt -> neck -> earring -> bracelet -> then rings. After that I did all the Patrician's stuff. Now all that is left is the class specific offhand. I have one done and in progress of one more.

I also did the same to help boost all 8 of the crafts, which helped me to craft all the AF sets too ironically.
