Increasing the amount of tanks available in game will only temporarily boost the amount of active tanks in game as they level to check it out. Once they are done or decide they don't like it, we will be right back to the same ratio. I do see SAM as a tanking candidate, though. DRK, I would see as a DPS.

It's funny because everyone wants Samurai AND Dark Knight to be DPS. Berserker should be DPS. Ninja is already going to be DPS. In short, no one wants new tanks. Just 11 DPS fighting over 2 spots in a 4 man group and 3 spots in an 8 man.

I for one want to see Viking....but thinking about it with axe and shield it would play a lot like a paladin. Its primary ability was provoke which Paladin already has... Though I guess it could be done and then use GLD and MRD as the cross class skills. (But with Flash would be a Paladin with an Axe)

I wouldn't rule out Samurai as being a tank class in this game considering the direction the devs have taken with certain classes. I imagine the base class though would have a DPS Katana Job and Tank Katana Job that sprouts from it. Regardless of which role Samurai becomes, I'm leveling it.

I wouldn't be too surprised if they had a generic katana class branch into SAM and NIN.

I'll be leveling Sam either way as well, but I'd greatly prefer it as a dps. I haven't leveled a melee dps (besides to unlock a job) specifically because I'm saving that fun for Sam.

I do get why people want more tanks in game, though I do not believe they'll get the results they are looking for. Instead of turning our favorite dps into tanks to try and balance things out for the DF, wouldn't it be better to pull tanks out of the plethora of FF jobs?

There are no real tanks in the ff job system besides maybe knight/paladin

It can go either way. As allluckys said, FF jobs don't have a big history when it comes to tanks. Samurai has always had high strength and high defense, so it fits the bill to be either dps or tank. Auron, for example, was a tank and my favourite incarnation of the samurai (with break abilities). I wouldn't mind either though.

In FFXI Samurai was originally meant to be a tank, from what I read, but it didn't work out cause of the mechanics. That doesn't need to be an issue for ARR.

Either direction can be really interesting.

Isn't Warrior already the "Viking Berserker" archetype? I mean, look at its AF, and its greataxe, and the ability it has called Berserk.
