I've played games where in order to earn abilities or advance to the next level, you had to go to a school or trainer where you had to perform some feat before being able to advance. And this would require some repetition to get it right. rather than a simple "do this, then get that" quest, the player actually had to develop the skill to advance. Not a bad idea. I think SE does something like that with the guild quests. But from 1 to 50 there really isn't enough party content compared to solo content. So everyone goes through the story mainly learning to solo dps through everything. Then they get to end game and have to learn their role for real.

This is my first MMO, and I've definitely taken quite a beating learning the roles. I started off with DPS, learning what to do and what not to do. I'm not perfect, but I'm learning. Lately I've been working on tanking. A few of my FC members have really been helping out there. I might be the exception and not the rule, but when people play a social game socially, learning from each other, they can learn a lot more. I know I still have quite a few areas to work on, that's why I've just reached The Stone Vigil. I think the ranking system they've talked about (MVP of a dungeon, etc) could help this out.
