As far as I can assume this problem occurs because retainers and player characters are not backed up at the same time. It would appear retainers are backed up either before player characters or more frequently. So this creates a situation when a crash is happening there is potential to loss items you remove from a retainer. Typically these roll backs go further back then when the problem is noticeable by the players. Typically when this particular crash happens you won't be able to do anything but chat in game. However, it is rolled back X minutes before that and if you took and items from a retainer in that time frame say goodbye to those items.

Not sure when crash occurred. I was afk between 9am and 8pm est when it occurred.
Steps:
I logged in to buy some weapons and armor at the market ward in Ul’dah. I purchased several items, Body armor, leg armor, head, belt, boots, glove, Thamaturge and Conjurer weapons. I had spent roughly 200,000 gil all of these new items were equipped and I set bazaar the gear I was previously wearing. Then I teleported to Camp Horizon sat next to the desk at the tent and went away from my computer. This was 9 am est on 5/21/11.
When I returned to the game at 8 pm est, the game had an error message. I restarted the game, logged into Takahime Oso. When I returned to the game, my gear that I had purchased was gone, all gear I was wearing before my market ward purchases was reequipped, and I was standing north of Camp Horizon, about 300 yards, I do not know the coordinates.
I no longer wish for any resolution, I have since leveled up, and purchased new equipment. I just would like to note that ingame rollbacks, and the response from the GM, and auto-reply@square-enix.com was a frustrating experience.
