Song Lyrics in FFXIV: Compilation, Discussion, and Interpretation

I had the Endwalker song on all day on repeat at work (lucky I work in a room by myself ;-p) and mostly it was so low as to be background noise, but I would catch snatches of the lyrics every now and then...

The one that kept standing out to me was: "'Fore our echoes begin to fade."

This makes sense; logically the conclusion of Endwalker will probably have us ridding the world of both Zodiark and Hydaelyn, I think anyone who's been paying attention probably has seen that coming. However... our capital-E Echo is a gift from Hydaelyn that helps us do a lot of things - like the story flashbacks we often have, and the visual markers in battle that show us where an attack is going to land before it hits, so that we can move out of it in time.

I realize this is probably unlikely given that it would spike the skill level and probably put some people off of the game, but I did have the thought, what if this is saying that our capital-E Echo will fade away once Hydaelyn is no more and we won't have those markers in fights anymore? Suddenly we have to remember each attack from name alone... :sweats: Again, I don't think it's very likely, but on the other hand, it would also kind of make sense...

They established in 5.2 that the Echo is not a gift from Hydaelyn and rather a power inherent to all of the Ancients that was rendered dormant after the Sundering, but could be potentially rekindled by a vision of the Starshower tugging at a soul's memories of the Final Days.

Hydaelyn was simply choosing to deliberately awaken it in those she sought to use as agents of her will.

Good point, Kage - I had forgotten about that massive plot point, somehow... /facepalm. Although... doesn't Hydaelyn usually also do her voice loop "hear feel think" spiel at the same time and it's some combination of that (seeing the starshower plus hearing the Hydaelyn loop) that awakens it in sundered souls? However, I suppose even then, the point still stands that it's not GRANTED by her but merely maybe AWAKENED with her intervention. I was looking it up again just now and GamerEscape (https://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Echo) basically says it can be either/or; seeing a starshower or hearing the "hear feel think" loop, so I guess just one path of awakening will be gone if Hydaelyn is gone.

Welp, this is a good example of why I mostly lurk and don't post, at any rate: sometimes my thoughts are stupid and it's embarrassing to get called out on that by a stranger :eek:

I think Ali is more focussing on the "it's embarrassing to get called out on that by a stranger" part, though most of the time, corrections made on the lore forum are usually done in good faith rather than a concerted effort at bashing one's self-esteem. Usually.

Thanks, guys - yes, MrThinker is right, I was focusing more on it being embarrassing to have your error recognized and commented on by a stranger, especially when it's something that's such a central story point like this. But yes, I know the comments were made in good faith and not meant to offend. I appreciate our community for that kind of thing.

There's a certain song that plays during a solo duty at level 87, was wondering if anyone else has tried to parse the lyrics.

I've updated the main post with all of the EW vocal themes, as well as what lyrics I've been able to gather and compile from here and youtube. Since the MULA was updated, it's a bit harder to find the music on youtube, and harder still to find consistent comments for lyrics, but I think I've managed to draw from the best guesses there and here, and can put them on the first page with confidence.

Is that all of them though? I'm wondering if the aetherial chanting in One Small Step (the

Mare Lamentorum/lunar surface zone theme

) for instance is actual lyrics or just Soken using the synthetic vox fx again like Ultima, Civilizations and others. I'm certain I can pick out some words in them, or at least sound like words, (I think I hear "twisting, turning" and "transcending" mentioned for instance), so I'm curious if that really has lyrics. I certainly hope it does!

, has the lyrics for Endcaller, the Dark Inside's theme been released yet? (aka

Zodiark's battle theme

) I did consider at least some of it might be part of Endwalker ~ Footfalls's lyrics (particulary in the final stanza), but knowing Soken he might have changed things. I'm pretty sure I can hear "Forevermore" in there, and I'm certain I hear "Lord Zodiark"... "while we fall..." but that's all I can come up with on that front.

As I fell in love with this particular track hearing it in the launch trailer (it's the orchestral/choral section in the second half of the trailer), I'm very interested in what the lyrics were (my only disappointment is I was so sure this was going to be the final battle theme for EW, given SE had a habit of sneaking a preview of the final battle theme into the previous launch trailers with the exception of ARR, but that's just me.:P)

I get the feeling that those two songs are using synthetic vocals. I can't really make out any distinct words in either, but we can't be certain until the OST gets released next year. What I'm most curious about is (major endgame spoilers!)

the opening to the final boss' theme. I'm not sure if those are actual words during The Worm's Tail section, since they don't sound like the Eorzean Symphony version, nor do they resemble the synthetic vocals in the game soundtrack. The Invincible section definitely sounds like the synthetic vocals from the game soundtrack, though, which is a bit disappointing, since I like the lyrics for the Symphony version.

I feel like firstly it needs to be broken up differently, or less – you've put verse breaks where the music shifts, but lyrically the words should continue directly.

And interpretation notes, some of which contain late game spoilers:

Re. general pacing, the whole thing feels like it may be structured like one big blank-verse poem and phrases sit across what seem to be verse breaks, like "a river of tears / flowing to an eternal sea" and "through you we live / tales".

Also, an important thing to notice with the first sets of lyrics is that they seem intended to echo the Scions' sacrifices as we progress through the zone, starting with Estinien (a wind to carry us forward), Y'shtola and Urianger (sight, seeing the truth), G'raha (promises made).


On some specific verses:


"Rises on a memory..."

"Born" could also be "borne" – so instead of rising on [a memory born from the ashes], it's rising on [a memory] carried from the ashes to new destinations.

I'm not convinced of my other edits but "Heaven's true sunset" is a rather meaningless phrase (and nothing that links clearly to Heavensward) so I'm trying to think what else it could be. I definitely think it sounds like "to" not "true".

On the note that it's referencing our journey through each expansion's symbolism, I see that flowing into the next verse too – more on Shadowbringers and the idea of an unending journey.

I know this is rather late in the game, but I've got some fixes I've been trying to make for public posts of Flow's lyrics - there are a few generally-accepted lines that I don't think are correct.

Omitted some correct verses for length, but here's my interpretation, with the old incorrect lyrics marked with strikethrough:

And my justification for each of the marked corrections:

1. Its loss and love - The sheer amount of both sorrow and joy in the WoL's life is so great that it cannot be held by words alone - thus, the tale overflowing in the following lines, carrying their light out to (the aetherial) sea.

2. weighed your every choice - I don't hear the 'th' in 'with' here, but I do hear the 'd' in 'weighed'. Venat is saying she's been alongside the WoL each step of the way, listening to their words and either weighing the choices they've had to make alongside them, or weighing the choices the WoL has made to see if they can be trusted with the fate of mankind.

3. 'Til you leave ashore - This line makes much more sense to me than 'to your devotion'. The previous lines were all about water - waters flowing into larger and larger bodies, the WoL's light being carried out to sea, sinking into its embrace and being borne down by the tides before surfacing. This is Venat saying she'll comfort them, care for them until it's time for them to leave once more upon the shore of the aetherial sea - Etheirys, where souls are all eventually reborn.

4. It cast down to dreams below - The hardest part of this song to hear by far. I'm certain the line prior to this isn't correct at all, but I haven't the slightest what it could actually be. This line, however, I'm reasonably sure I have correct, because the previously-suggested line is kind of word salad-y and this feels more grammatically correct. It's a toss-up whether it's "calls" or "cast", but the rest is right.

Updated the first page with the official lyrics for Flow, Close in the Distance, and Hic Svnt Leones, as well as the official titles for the final boss themes.

I guess it's rather moot now but the EW end boss theme titles had been apparently leaked a few weeks ago (they were listed on the FF Wiki), but it's nice to see they were both confirmed now with the official OST's release. :D

Also, I'm wondering if Uematsu should get a co-composer credit on the first page for Your Answer, given it's a remix of Answers (I presume it was also using Susan Calloway's lyrics from the original recording of Answers resampled, but I wasn't sure if it was really her or if Soken had Amanda Achen record the new lyrics instead). But if he's not officially credited in the OST liner notes (I haven't got it yet so I cannot check) then there's no problem either way.

Technically The Final Day also could potentially have a Uematsu credit too, as among other things it has a partial cue to none other than Final Fantasy too if you listen closely, but maybe I'm clutching at straws with that one so don't mind me! :p

The official lyrics for "Close in the Distance" confirm something I had suspected but it seemed a bit speculative to bring up in my previous post on the lyrics – that some of the words have a double purpose in two different lyrics.

Specifically, "I see you unbroken"/"unbroken promises" (there's even a comma suggesting the first lyric is more intended) and "no time for mourning"/"morning rises".

That's good to hear, would have felt wrong otherwise personally speaking; I'm aware they didn't get her into a studio to do a new recording but given she was the voice of Hydaelyn initially all those years ago it's a nice bookend even though it was simply using a prior vocal performance.

Am at the point in the game where am almost entering Endwalker - I'd resisted watching the trailer/cinematic for it as didn't want to spoil anything.

But I watched it a short time ago, and dear god it blew me away.... and I have to confess this part of the song/cinematic, with the key-change:

Did anyone manage to piece together the lyrics of the song in 6.1 trailer?

I'm talking about the music that plays from the halfpoint of the trailer onward.
I've been trying to figure out the lyrics, but English is not my native language and it's been hard...

Someone pointed me to this topic so I guess I'd ask for help

Here's what I (tentatively) got so far (with timestamps from the trailer):

I've learned from previous trailers that trying to decipher lyrics in them is a difficult and often unproductive process. That didn't stop me anyway.
The song starts at roughly the 1:41 mark fwiw, behind Y'shtola's voiceover. It's hard for me to make much out with the sfx and voice acting, and much of what I have matches what you've said or is near close-enough.

So I'll just list the earlier bits I hear here:

1:45 (during Endsinger) -- something high?
1:50 (during Alpha & Omega) -- one of us will carry?
1:53 (WoL looks upward) -- "when day beckons night" <-- this is one of the clearest lines, i think
2:00 (Hien amongst the Terminus) -- "hand in hand"
2:20ish (party running up the stairs) -- for Echoes spun?? ride through the moonlight??

I also definitely feel like they say something akin to "the court divine" at approx 2:30

Apologies for the deviation from the discussion pertaining to the Newfound Adventure trailer, but whilst have tried searching for it I can't find the answer to this question elsewhere...

What is the name of the music track which plays when the Ragnarok launches? I know it's not the first time I've heard that track, but can't recall where else I heard it and if it sounded quite the same when heard it previously.

I think you're right in a few places I have it different, e.g. "wood" is probably gold, and I think it might be "your hands our fortunes' mint". I'm pretty confident on "Past us, restless time" but the last two syllables are really inscrutable to me.

I didn't put a lot of changes from other have,
At the end of each "We pray" I added one of the Gods because I feel like I catch that?
Other than that if you see any very out there lyrics I just went with what I heard, not with what I think makes sense.
