I don't wanna turn this into a flame war, but you have to understand that a lot of people will be playing this game from all over the world so it is in Square Enix's best interest to avoid anything that might offend. This includes gay marriage and other things that might seem far from offensive in USA and Japan. Best to keep out the politics, the social ethics, and the drama. No matter how right your stance is, it can still translate to lost customers.

There's your problem! This game isn't real life. There are laws against animal cruelty, yet we're free to kill everything we see. Hell, murder is illegal everywhere, why can we just murder humanoid mobs? The addition of races other than human should be a key factor in remembering this isn't the planet we live on. Fantasy is a wonderful thing!

Plus, two men or two women can get married in XIV, as long as one of them plays the opposite gender. The entire point of this is how stupid the system is. The characters we're playing as aren't "Male" or "Female," they're lines of coding that make up our avatars.
