Only thing I've found crafting useful for is while leveling sub classes and being able to quickly make HQ gear for them.
Otherwise in the end, you get better gear from spamming Amdapor Keep and Wanderer's Palace :/

what I mean if even if it was superior, is it worth investing in taking crafting to level 50 and gearing up up, just to make those items?
It it sure great for people who are already crafters but I am not sure the incentive is enough for someone to start crafting
AK and WP gets you DL, which (with the exception of tank chestpiece and legpiece) is cheaper and pretty much equivalent to crafted ilvl 70 gear.
Sure, with grade IV materia (think 120k+ a piece) and some forbidden melding, you can get *slightly* better stats - but you're still going to switch to Allagan/Mythology gear for pretty much every slot, save maybe some jewelry.
Bottom line - crafting in it's current form is borderline useless, a huge time sink and an even bigger gil sink, with 2.1 bringing mostly vanity stuff - and CT loot that will make crafted items even less needed.
Because implementing recipes that yield bind-on-pickup/creation items was *such* a difficult concept...
The stat difference between a fully melded set (III materia) and a full DL set is not slight, the difference is very noticeable.
The above is closer overall stat wise to ilvl90 gear than it is to Darklight.
I do agree that it's expensive, but rightly so. (Though mage pants taking 27 tomb mats to make is daft)
A crafter who has made gil from crafting can ding 50 on their DoW/DoM, get their relic and be geared for t4 immediately, so it can be pretty useful.
Fact is something has to be done. I can't belief Yoshida is willing to accept the status quo at the moment.
Is he really not willing to think about crafters as a class itself and with that mentioned willing to not use the amount of money already invested and milk every thing posible out of the system?
As long as they aren't willing to "risk" a bit, they wont be able to make profit from a solid system.
