I guess unlike you I actually have a full FC to run content with..? Should I apologize for that? I can make assumptions too.

The only thing the lockouts do is prevent you from being able to help other groups/friends get through the content, which is a big problem for large FCs that also has dedicated Coil progression statics since they cannot go back to help others get through it. I'd rather see a gear lockout that meant that, if you didn't get the drop you wanted (or it did drop but you decided not to/didn't win the lot) from a certain turn you wouldn't be able to loot that item (basically, tough luck on your Turn X drop this week). At least that way, you can go back to earlier turns for helping/teaching other members and groups how to get through that content, and you are still restricted in loot in the same way.
If the intention for FCs was to only have 8 or 16 members in it, why, then, is the maximum number of members 512? Surely they'd have picked a smaller number instead, and perhaps they should have done. I'm fairly sure, though, that it was said they will be trying to expand the system to let a 24-man pre-made alliance head into CT. It was either keep it as it is for now, or delay the content for longer. The former option is a good choice, as it lets SE ensure the content actually works first.
As for how I see the intention behind the Armoury System? You aren't necessarily meant to gear out all of your roles in the same space of time to the same degree. You'd make a decision and pick a class you want to really focus on, over all the others, and that is the one you take to Coil to gear up. The other means of acquiring gear allows you to start to gear up your other roles for when you want a bit of a change (but serious content should use your serious class), or to prepare for when it can be taken into Coil and geared up (unless you are getting Greed lots on gear that no one else needs in Coil). Being the best geared in all your roles should take time and be something that happens progressively, rather than just out-farming a certain content non-stop.
Of course, I only have around 3 hours an evening to play (more on weekends), and even my own Coil runs only make up 4 hours a week (2x 2hr runs per week because the static I play with all have real lives to live first like jobs and families and commitments). These restrictions actually let us, as a group of friends, make a decision about what content we can do on a given week. The only people that are really affected by these lockouts (aside from the Coil one not letting you help out FC members) are those who probably have a lot of time to spend in the game and are interested more in getting things as fast as possible, as opposed to being fairly paced in their progression and working on things over time. Whilst I understand the reasons against the lockouts, I personally find them to be quite fair and reasonable (again, aside from the Coil not letting you go back to Turn 1 to help others).
But then I'm a fairly casual player - I like to get things done but I'm not in a rush; 30-40 minute WP runs are perfectly fine by me - my enjoyment comes from playing this MMO with other players, not getting the most gear/token rewards over a given period of time. That, I would think, is the real issue behind the complains. Hardcore players are held back in the favour of more casual players like myself. I'd love nothing more than to spend most of my days playing games; sadly, I cannot. In the same way, I find it hard to truly sympathize with the extremes (both really casual and really hardcore players).
tl;dr I have very few issues with the lockouts, and I don't think there is any problem in the way the Armoury System works or encourages multi-discipline players - the problems tend to lie in the minds of certain types of players.
For some of us the game has been out since 2010 and we had 2 years to do everything to 50 if we so desired plus spam AV and CC for the darklight that used to be so hard to get. Lockouts suck. So we do coil on Monday. Then what? Unless you fail a turn and keep at it you have nothing else to do other than the pita gathering of 1 shard at a time, gathering more food mats and spamming to hit mytho caps and if you're really bored, sb in CM runs to make gil from the materia. At least in 1.0 I could hit AV and CC every day for hours on end if I chose for the chance at what was then the best gear. Even the thought of going out and gathering fire and water shards to replentish or attempt to replentish I should say what I use up making food sucks. We can't even convert fish anymore into shards and crystals.
That actually sounds like 1.0. Even if you did AV and CC perfectly to get the corselet it wasn't guaranteed to drop so you would have to re-enter after the 15 min cd if u didn't do a quick SR of CC the old relic way and do the dungeon all over again. In fact that's what we did because we had to get proficient at 17 min runs in those 2 dungeons for relic. Start with one and while it was on cd go do the other one, rinse and repeat. The drop rate sucked, but there was no lockout and we could do it as much as we wanted to.
That at least gave us something to do other than gathering the same old crap for the next week's 1 night of coil.
lockouts definitely need to be job related, not character related. they way things are you are better off with 7 level 50 characters than one level 50 with 7 level 50 jobs.
Did you even play 1.0? If no, then you have no idea how long it took to lvl in the beginning. Even with grind parties it took forever and a day. When they added exp chains it still took time just not as much. With only 2 endgame dungeons worth farming for gear, if you weren't spamming dungeons, you were lvling another dom/dow class to stay busy killing stuff to alleviate the boredom of lvling all the dol/doh to 50. With so little to do alot of us did that. Even got crowns for it with decent stats at the time. I did it to keep busy, achieve goals and just because I'm 50 everything doesn't mean I play everything. I'm just happy I don't have to deal with the way they revamped the lvling of crafting.
Practice patience? We already did that. It was called 1.0.
Talk to the 2 healers in my coil static that I yes do other content with also on how much allagan gear they haven't seen drop then say the lockout is great. We've seen and still see more DRG gear than we would want so in reality we could take turns gearing up a class we don't play with all the DRG we see.
I wholey agree with this, my FC have started making time/events to level alt characters. Some of us do it on another account so we can use our main to PL us (i do).
We are currently levelling another alt just to help Team 2 in our FC as they always require 2-3 PUGs and it often fails for them in turn 4, so we're levelling what they have missing just to help, then levelling ANOTHER alt just so we can do another class we like.
So this game has kind of forced us to play 3 different characters, like a typical MMO. Most in the FC don't mind, they're used to this kind of mentality from other games, I on the other hand hate this and it sucks a lot. If I wasn't doing this, I'd probably never login other than coils and even then its like meh... I'm about finished on coils for 1 class rest is just Myth for BiS which I don't even need FC for...
The design of this loot is really killing motivation for a lot of people.
