I feel like summoner is in a good place as far is how its gameplay style is. I like the dot style of play, and think it compliments the pet playstyle very well. You throw a few dots, and command your pet around. My biggest gripe and I think people have touched on this is that the egi's themselves are very "dumb". They do thing on their own and thats great, but there needs to be more control. Allowing us to pick and choose what skills we want them to use, would let people have more options in various fights. An Example is, using Ifrit-egi against Ifrit, you can't due Ifrit building stun resistance on eruptions. The Ifrit-egi will use the stun no matter what, unless I fully control him and that brings me to my second point. Its not very intuitive to fully control your pet. As it stands it currently takes away from MY OWN global cooldown to use one of HIS skills. I should not be losing one of my casts telling one of my pets to use a skill.

For a while, I was all for these 'egis' since I understand targeting could be a problem. But overtime, I've began to lose sight of the fact that I was a SUMMONER, being next to such underwhelming egis - they're not exactly something you take pride in, and are somewhat ugly.
With that being said, I would massacre moogles for the summons Summoners had in FFXI:

The Egi's just need to be more fleshed out and give them something that POPS, rather than size. Give them more detail or even Minature versions of themselves, that are a little under waist high for others and as tall as a Lalafell. I'd be okay with that, but the giant grandiose size of 11, just aren't good for this game. It requires to much movement and looking out of attacks to dodge. If something is to big and covers the screen, its hard to see whats going on, and dodge accoringly.Quote:

Pet Commands should be available to: (ai- artificial intelligence...ie auto pilot for pet)
1) ai-buffs only; ai-attacks only; ai-tank only; as well as the ai-everything that's currently in place.
2) ai support a specific party member instead of the summoner -

that dev respone is not surprising but ultimatly very very disapointing. you guys tried to do something new, i respect that, but in the end it just falls very short of the mark that many many people where expecting and hoping for.

Honestly I'm disappointed in FFXIV's iteration of Summoner as well. It's a fun class to play, it just doesn't feel like a Summoner.
The Egi's design is something that I can overlook. Sure, I wish it was bigger. I think the sizes of the ones you fight in the SMN job quests are perfect. But the looks of the Egis isn't what I have the big problem with, it's how the FFXIV "Summoner" plays. It doesn't feel like our focus is on the summons at all, in fact, our summons are just sort of a side thing. Keeping our DoT spells up at all times, keeping on top of Fester and Aetherflow cooldowns, weaving off GCD abilities in between instant-casts, proper utilization of Ruin and Ruin II...these are widely considered the most important aspects of the Summoner job. None of those things have anything to do with Summoning or Summons. Manually managing your pets does set players apart, you should be manually using all your pet's abilities to get the most out of them (Contagion is the most prominent example), however like I said it's hardly the focus of what we do.
Our pets are not the focus of our supposed pet class.
I honestly wish there would be a complete redesign of the Summoner class with a much heavier focus on our pets and pet management since they're barely even a consideration right now, however in all likelihood that will not happen. I sincerely hope that I am wrong on that assertion though. Maybe with as much attention as this thread is getting and continuing to get there's a chance. -
