Was obv on my way to get soot black but stumbled upon Currant purple. Thought it looked sick so I might stick with this for a bit. :D
My path of progression is as follows, with the number of feather messages given per fruit fed:
Desert Yellow->Millioncorn Yellow (1/1 Xelphatol Apple)
Millioncorn Yellow->Pumpkin Orange (0/9 Xelphatol Apples, 1/1 O'Ghomoro Berry)
Pumpkin Orange->Sunset Orange (0/10 Xelphatol Apples, 1/1 O'Ghomoro Berry)
Sunset Orange-> ??? (0/10 Xelphatol Apples, 1/2 O'Ghomoro Berries)
I'm expecting Blood Red, given the previous results others have posted. I'm undecided between Dalamud, Rolanberry, and Wine Red currently as to what I want.
Got my Dalamud Red an hour ago :) Many times messing up while reading this forum. But the total count was 43 Apples, 10 pears, 15 Berries, and 5 Valfruit. (Dont remember the order in which I did it. many mistakes were made :P)

Currant purple in the daytime!
Having the FC garden will help you greatly to save a bit of Gil while you tweak your Chocobo's plumage. I would recommend you buy one of every seed type (all six) and fertilize them with some Grade3 Shroud soil (if you have a miner) for some high yield to play around with.
I assume you haven't fed anything to your Chocobo to change his initial plumage from Desert Yellow. That would start with Very High REDs, High GREENs, and low BLUEs.
So to start, you're going to want to drastically lower those GREENs and REDs using BLUE DEEPEN'ers (O'Ghomoro Berry). This will have the adverse effect of raising your BLUEs, however getting all three colors around the same value will make the voyage to Soot Black a little easier. If you add in a few apples and pears into the mix, it should slow down your BLUEs from getting too high in the process.
I would try this for my initial feeding:
x12 O'Ghomoro Berry
x6 Mamook Pear
x6 Xelphatol Apple
At the very least, this will put you much closer to your goal, then we can decide what to feed him to direct this new color toward your desired color of Soot Black.
Husband gave his chocobo 15 doman plums and got 1 feather message from default and all in one sitting. It came out ice blue. I gave him another doman plum that he then fed and received another feather message. Waiting to see what color pops out.
54 berries, 49 apples and pears got me Midnight Blue
Yes I currently have one of each seen in the garden all with Grade 3 Shroud soil. They will soon be harvestable and that's when I want to go. For initial feeading do you mean all those 3 at once? or like feed berrys first, wait a bit then mamook, or do you do 1 by one? Sorry havnt even touched the feeding of fear of screwing it up
