Finished MSQ and gave Hrothgals a try as of a few days ago. Overall I'd say the devs did a great job, but they definitely have a few issues.
PROS:
- They look really cool. It's like that Maho artist's art brought to life. Very pleased with how they turned out visually.
- They have great animations. Their run loop is one of the best in the game IMO and their emotes strike a nice balance between cool/feral and some that are a little sillier without being straight up goofy.
- The slouch is enough to say "I'm a beast race" without overdoing it, which was the deal breaker for me with male Hrothgar.
- Generally look good in most glams that don't have the rigging issue (see below).
NEUTRAL:
- The /sit and idle poses aren't anything to write home about.
CONS:
- Zero hairstyles beyond the very few default ones and the derplander man bun, which are reduced even further by being locked to different faces.
- IMO the voice selection leaves a lot to be desired. For a beast race I would have expected more voice options in a lower register but they're almost all fairly high pitched. I usually go with a deeper smoky voice but that just wasn't an option so I went with the voice I disliked the least. It's grown on me a bit since then but every time I've tried another race there's always been a voice where I was like "perfect" and that wasn't the case with Hrothgal.
- There are some very strange issues going on with their gear rigging, especially in the upper arm area. Some glams look fine and some are EXTREMELY WIDE in the arms. It makes a lot of gear look ridiculous.
- No hats, but this doesn't bother me much since I rarely use hats to begin with.
Overall I think they turned out great and I applaud the devs for delivering what most people interested in them wanted to see all these years. I'm undecided if I'm sticking with it permanently but I absolutely will be splitting my time between hrothgal and highlander at the very least. If the devs can address the weird gear issue and the hairstyles that may sway things as well.
They can wear a surprising number of hats and helmets, way more than I expected. Some are even normal sized vs the Viera "mini hat" situation. It's far from all and could be better, but many more than I found while trying Viera.
The *serious* lack of hairstyles and the ginormous arm/shoulder problem are my main complaints but overall, I love them.
i think we are supporting you guys, im just not changing my look though, I like my Au Ra.
Don't let the door hit you on the way out sweetheart!

It's crazy just how much better female Hrothgar look then male. Males look like bargain bin Charr from Guild Wars, with the janky run, lanky posture, and strange proportions, they feel cheap. I have zero qualms with those who play them, I just don't like the race itself at all, they should've made them closer to male Ronso in proportions imo.
Meanwhile, while not as beastly as male Hrothgar or female Charr, females they definitely hold their own, good run, faces, proportions, though some of the attire looks way too bulky, and the lack of helms is still a huge bummer.
I'm super tempted to use the free Fantasia to swap to one, I already made one I like, though I'd have to spend money on two name changes and another Fantasia when I inevitably swap back to a dude.
I genuinely want them to have MORE hairstyles for one, and none locked to their faces.
It seems liek 10 steps back for them to have 3 hairstyles per face, and stolen mel gibsons 1994 mullet

I'm assuming that they just wanted to make sure Hrothgals would be ready for DT's release and limited the hairs in order to ensure that happened. Now that they're out, the graphics update is complete, and Yoshi-P has said they don't want to add any more races, this will hopefully mean that they can work on both Hrothgar and Viera hairs and hats. Crossing fingers at least.
I'm so happy though with how our ladies came out! I keep getting distracted at times admiring my own Hrothgal and others that I run across, we look so good.
What disappoints me is the complete lack of hairstyles other than the stated minimum... people have been fighting for YEARS to get anything added for viera and hrothgar, and now we have to start over?
Otherwise I'm really pleased. They're athletic, cool, big, and have the animations to match. At this stage, would say that the work of Maho and others was not in vain, and this is the closest thing that was on my mind too.
Always happy to see them in party, and my queen looks absolutely beautiful in msq. Although I hope one day complete her look with the og haircut! :p
So, um, apparently some cutscenes can't handle the fact our majestic queens are now walking on this game's star. Someone on twitter/x discovered a rather mismatched fistbump, followed from the WoL clipping through the floor really badly. It is hilarious, but also sad, considering it shows how little care was put into making them suitable for this world.

I just want to ask any professional or semi professional, or highly skilled amateur 3D artist; is it really that hard to port hairstyles between races in this game? I've seen people mod xiv using 3D assets and it honestl doesn't look that hard.
Seems to me like the real issue is polygons per character model and other limitations they impose on themselves so that ps4 and 2001 laptops can run the game.
It's been a bit since I've done 3D work, but considering female hrothgars have head shapes very similar to other races, there's not much reason why they wouldn't be able to just quickly port them over. They knew what problems the male hrothgar heads initially had and designed them to not have the same issues. But I don't think difficulty has anything to do with it, I think they just have us very low on the list of priorities.
Been soooo looking forward to fem hrothgar, played as one since launch now, but just yesterday I had to go out and buy another Fantasia, because I'm just tired of this crap now. It's been years and we still don't have all headgear fixed for Viera and now Female Hrothgar. Female Hrothgar also are suffering from severe gear bloatage of the arms and legs. Some gear even flattens their chest and looks like armor intended for a male. Some gear makes their feet look way too small, or even makes their lower leg look way too thin. Sleeve holes are ridiculously big. There are modders out there that have already fixed all headgear for Viera and Male Hrothgar. If they can do it, why can't SE, whom we are paying our subs and online store micro-transactions to, make this happen after so much time? I was Viera prior and won't even go back to that. My 2 favs and I just can't, because of the amount of issues. Had to go back to Miqote, which is what I started as in 1.0. Please make #1: Fixing headgear & hairstyles for new races & genders and #2: Fixing the whole of Female Hrothgar, some of your top priorities SE......
Female hrothgar my beloved. I used fantasia as soon as they came out. They need fixes for their arms (as everyone noted) but I'm overjoyed with them nonetheless.
Happy Hat Day, folks! Finally working... for the most part, that is. There's only one from my tiny squeezed collection that remains invisible, but guess it's a matter of fix.
In faaact, recently reviewed 5.0 benchmark records and noticed that hroths' settings have changed since then. There weren't even hairstyles as such?.. 4 heads with hair sewn on, lol. Although the binding of cuts to a specific face has partially been preserved, let's hope there's progress in the direction~ ( (face 1 user, but imo face 2 got the best ones).
Yep, at first the single braids or tweaks were just some optional additions for the hairstyle. When they made it available for change via Aesthetician so you didn't need a Fantasia for a haircut, they basically duplicated each hairstyle and made one with that braid etc. and one without. It was such an awkward moment when that change went live.
