He is definitely a magic user, iirc that's all he uses. I just also recall hearing that he had a giant sword as well, which made me think FFXIV DRK. So I guess you could go either way. Without thinking about the sword I'd just say he is an OP BLM lol. I liked him, so it'd be cool to see a gear set with his inspiration ~

Has big blacksword, but uses a lot of high tier black magic.
Emperor Mateus, Exdeath, Golbez, and maybe FF9 Garland seemed to have been armored mages.
Glamour restriction is fine if they were consistent. As it stands it's very inconsistent as to who wears what as many have pointed out. For example, monks in Heavensward can wear the caster set from ARR.

Additionally, tanks have been receiving less and less heavily armored gear to the point that many can't even tell which gearset belongs to which role whenever new gear is shown
I honestly think cross glamours should be a thing. Maybe not for special stuff like artifact gear or drops in dungeons, but any normal gear that can be crafted.
