There's no reason not to. Marriage in this game isn't tied to any real world benefits (tax breaks, power of attorney, etc.), so leave the backwards "us" and "them" ignorance out of the game and allow it.

Man, this thread is sooooo early 2012. Now people wanna talk about it? How stupid.
I completely agree with you.
Though I haven't lost all hope. Maybe Square Enix will come to their senses and change their stance—swiftly.
As many others have said before, either do it right or don't do it at all. Doing it half-heartedly in a discriminatory way is the worst option of all options out there—unfortunately now that the question has been asked and an answer has been given, that option doesn't exist anymore. Make it right. Now.
Why the need for marriage at all? Its a video game and regardless of what other think/want it isnt up to anyone of us. Now maybe SE dosent believe in same -sex marriage thats fine thats their right. It also means that they dont have to add what you want or I want. This isnt a game breaking feature and honestly it dosent need to be added into the game. Personally SE has more to worry about than how many players want marriage, same sex marriage or traditional marriage. This topic is something that should be worked on in the real world than a damn video game it is pointless. Maybe if those of you that support or dont support this subject would spend more time and energy on this issue in real life and less time on a damn video game board bitching and moaning about it, something would or wouldnt be done.
War, you raise some interesting points, and you're right, it isn't a game breaking feature. Yet, they've already plans for it and it's to be part of the content in the game, however minute. Therefor, if they do take a stance on what direction the content will go (which, as you said is their right), it would be unwise to think there wouldn't be some sort of backlash towards said decision.
So logically, they would either pull the plug on the entire thing, or implement ethical equality.
SE may indeed have more to worry about, yet that doesn't push this topic completely off the list of things to think about.
You say we ought to spend more time trying to work this out in real life. Yet, if we can't even discuss and come to a beneficial conclusion for all parties in a mature fashion on a video-game board, is there really any hope?
There are a lot of things in the game or being added to it that arent game breaking, like housing, chocobo raising, gardening, etc. But, they add more things to do, something MMO's do better than some single player game where none of that would matter at all.
Like someone said, if you're worried about having same-sex things in your video games. Go play a Bioware game.
