I've had 10,000 crysta since launch day. SE can start charging that's fine I simply think it should be a reduced fee, not full price. We a playing a game that was so bad at launch the original director was removed and the new one decided he has to rebuild the core of the game, yes he is going to reuse as much of the assets as possible but this game was not salvageable. They are making a new game and reusing much of the assets, not fixing this game other than patching to the point where people can stand to play it for a time until the new game is released.

Bottom line SE loses NOTHING from starting the payments. Because no one is paying now. If they leave SE isn't losing a subscriber as they were never paying in the first place. They will make money by default and they need that money for 2.0 and quite frankly anyone who enjoys the game and plays it on a regular basis and isn't willing to fork over such a small amount per month should just quit and be done with it. -

All you who think S-E charging monthly before 2.0 won't have a negative impact on the game are wrong.
A relaunch is still a relaunch.
Every day you probably drive by a store or restaurant that has a "GRAND REOPENING" sign.
Are you going to go there? No way. It's generally a last desperate attempt to salvage their business. Things don't drastically change where a grand reopening or a relaunch is initiated.
How S-E is going to get customers for 2.0 isn't going to be their trailer, or releasing it on a different platform. They are going to get players by word of mouth from existing players, invitations from friends, encouragement from peers. If there is only 10% of the current community playing, there isn't much room for this kind of marketing.
tl;dr
FFXIV will remain damaged from its initial launch far after 2.0 is released. If Square-Enix wants this game to make any money in the future off this title, they need to keep everyone happy until the relaunch. -

Some games are bad, some games are good, and then there are some games that are really Awesome.
Some FF games were bad while others were good. Does this Tarnish SE's Rep? Heck no
People make mistakes and now they have an outline of a Second Chance. But they need Revenue to being out the best Quality work in this game? SE can't keep this game always Free or the game WILL die in the long run.
Alot of people either stated
A) they will see the game and pay for it to see what will happen to the Old Eorzea within each patch leading up to Ver 2.0
B) They will wait till Ver 2.0 will come out
C) A handful are just pricks ( Trolls)
Looking at A or B It wouldnt matter and Im fine with either or of what people will do , because either way come Ver 2.0 It will be the same result if they had left it F2P leading up to Ver 2.0.
You want a Quality game,? A Quality 2.0 Patch? Well, one way or another will get to the same destination.
Also with a FFXIV Promotion Trailer, if it Brings Hype.. people will be Looking into it. -

S-E are not just losing nothing with every player who drops subscription for now (long-term considerations aside), they're gaining something. Every player connected to an MMORPG carries an overhead. At least in the short term, not only will subscription fees allow them to begin to take in money, the amount of money it costs to keep Final Fantasy XIV operating will also drop.
Oh all MMO's have a cut-off point where income from players doesn't cover the basic costs of keeping the game switched on, of course, and we'll probably fall below that until the re-release. But still, 'figured it bears mention that not only will they begin to blunt their losses through those that do maintain their subscriptions, they'll also be dealing with a decreased player overhead while they continue development and all.
Now, I'm not really arguing for either side. There are some very worrying PR implications here that v2.0 will have to outweigh. But still, I couldn't help but notice that people, whichever side of the discussion they may be on, seem to be failing to recognise the fact that every player connected increases the operation costs, and should the player count decrease, those costs will drop. Normally for an MMO that tiny advantage is completely irrelevant in the face of a lost customer, but ... hardly normal circumstances.
That point gives something to people choosing either option: you'll be helping the game, even just a little, even if you decide to leave for the time being.
On the other hand they could just turn the game off and come back to us in a couple of years. I kinda find it a comforting thought they're not doing that. -
