2.55 Main Scenario Requirement.

Good luck doing it in only a few days or a weekend as a new player! O.o When I said the quest chain only takes 6 hours or so, that's assuming you have ilvl 90 gear. If you have to grind out the gear and do extra raids (like crystal tower) it very well could take weeks for someone to get ilvl 90 gear and clear the quest chain. Especially since not as many people will be playing the old content and queue times for dungeons and raids will go up. I disagree with this thread.

You can't say people are held back by old content just because they're leveling over the intended completion level. For one, Level 50 quests do not give EXP and they haven't given any indication that that will change. Second, old players who have not completed the storyline have only held themselves back.

Note that the Binding Coil of Bahamut, Crystal Tower arc, Hildibrand Story, Extreme Primals, and even the Relic quest is completely optional and will not be required for Heavensward. There is a ton of content available that isn't all that easy for new players that COULD have been required to play Heavensward, but they're not. All that's required is the Main Scenario Quest and I don't think that's too much to ask for.

Most of it you can be completely carried through with little to no effort anyway. For newer players I only see Steps of Faith (which is probably getting nerfed in tonight's patch for version 2.57) and possibly The Chrysalis to be stumbling blocks. Even in Single Player duties, you will be given incremental Echo until you become super powerful. In the ~2 years I've been playing this game I have never heard of any player not being able to complete a single player duty with maximum echo buff. All other content required is faceroll easy and SOMEONE out there will carry you through Duty Finder so there is no excuse.

I don't understand why you think "gating content behind other content" is a problem. It seems like you just use that buzz word as an excuse since "time gating", a legitimate criticism of the game, has been a notorious issue. But they are completely separate things. When you get locked out of a gate and you need to pass it, what do you do? Complain until it magically opens? No, you should go and find a key. Time gating is different because there is no key to find and you must wait and there is nothing you can do about it. The key to unlocking Heavensward gated content is to complete the Main Scenario Quest, that's all there is to it.

For people who want instant gratification and want to go explore the new areas right away without doing the earlier quests, that's just too bad for them. The developers never said this was an "open world" style game that you can do whatever you want whenever you want.

Everything but story is optional??? huh? I don't think so.

Assumedly all the story quests between 2.1-2.55 will be giving exp come expansion, it would be kind of wierd if they didn't at that point. They don't right now because there would be no point to it since we are at cap when we did them/are doing them right now. Still my personal opinion that by SoF new players would about lvl 53 which would be about equivilent with ilvl 90, with gear that should be around that level and most importantly, base stats that have increased which can make a good bit of difference.

I like how this clown, he's funny. Totally missing the point that FF has always been story driven, that MMOs have gear treadmills and quest content. I bet he'd be one of the folks who would complain about the inclusion of average item level if he played back then.

He just ignores 99% of arguments against his point and chooses to focus on the 1% he can insult.

finishing the 2.55 story and be on a lv30 class/job or higher to unlock them.

Solution: allow all players to freely enter Ishgard upon purchasing the expansion pack, but if the player has not completed MSQ 2.55, they will immediately aggro Lv60 Ishgardian guards who will murder them and send them back to home point.

Why does it bother you that people play FF games for a different reason?

Quite frankly, the first few FF games had some of the most unapologetically generic stories, and the rest were received poorly by many people who aren't invested in the franchise (and even those who are. See: every argument about what the best/worst FF games are).

There are a lot of people who would prefer to play this game without the chore of doing the MSQ, and the possibility of stifling subscription numbers by disallowing people from doing the content that all of their friends are playing by forcing them to slog through something they don't want to do is a poor decision for everyone involved. You're only hurting yourself in the long run.

Ok, three things:

1. I like ilvl. Been playing with it for years. Don't just assume that I would complain about something.

2. How is saying the following an insult:

3. I have not been arguing for getting rid of all the story. I have been arguing for a smooth transition between levels 50 to 51 if you are a fresh, new player. When 30% of the story is crammed into that one level compared to 1.4% (on average) for each other level before 50, that does not seem very smooth to me.

Since a certain someone still appears in the culinarian guild quest after 2.55, and we are simply expected to accept that the Cul quest happens chronologically before the events of 2.55, I don't see why they can't let people into Ishgard without doing the main story, just make them unable to do the new main story quests.
