Why not abolish the Class system entirely in favor of Jobs? [@ Devs]

while i have no evidence, it seemed to me so far from what's been described that taking a job is optional and not permanent, and is intended for party play where you need stricter roles. This leads me to believe that You'll always have to option to go "bare" for solo.

i posted this in another thread but ill do it again!

its not a good healer or summoner or conjurer its just a generic "class/job".
thats what Glad is. its not that great of a tank its not that good at DD or healing.

what im saying is rename class to job and don't add jobs as side skill just add the job PLD's could have great swords or something else. hell leave con and thm just add blm and whm but not as a side talent.
you could still mix and match as you please but some skills you couldn't just like it is now.

if they are going to redo zones like the black shroud why the hell not a guild. for all you guys know the pally guild in in the town that's not opened yet. (ishguard or whatever)

I think it takes away depth to instantly have a rank 50 pld just cuz you have a rank 50 glad - a side quest.
unless there is something to grind sp or ap wise for pld.

What I like best about classes is to be able to mix the actions and abilities from other classes freely. Jobs don't allow to do that.

some of you are missing the whole point of the class/job situation, so I really hope the devs decision isn't affected by people like OP. What they're proposing sounds amazing to me, and it's one of the biggest changes I'm looking forward to.

It still could be the case because the Grand Companies will issue the jobs and will reward the gear so it's possible the /job activation and all related items/gears are GC instance related. They have hinted at Battle Chocobo's too for some quests/missions but I would not expect to get to keep the Choco. Maybe we don't get to keep the gear either or even the job. lol

For many players that don't have acces to cross class skills, jobs will make them better at soloing with the job equipped.

Think about it. If I'm a Gladiator with no cross class skills that can solo fairly easy, why wouldn't you think I can solo better by having the paladin job equipped that gives me healing and defensive skills along with the artifact gear?

That is a valid point but what I think others (well me anyway) are saying is that maybe you can play Gla/Pal or Pug/Mnk solo and you might like it, even love it and prefer it but your sp-per-hour is likely to be lower due to longer drawn out fights. A Gla/xxx or Pug/xxx with the full cross class abilities will still be superior in sp/hr grinding.

But I won't judge. I like doing my own thing and creating a character I like, not what others think I should be...except when I need them for a Dungeon Raid or Limit Break quest, etc. Then I am perfectly willing to "tow the company line" (submit to the elitsm of partying). And That is why the Armory System Works Brilliantly because we can easily switch from what we want to what a PT wants and back again all depending on the situation. (Actually it will get even easier after the next couple of updates.)

they have said this it just a title system that would not allow you to hybrid spell that does not make sense to that job so you in a party outside city they disband 500exp from level up? switch to class and solo the rest.

@Engineer don't you get that idea around class? is for soloing because they can hybrid have more spell so you can tank/dd/heal yourself better in a solo play. Like the 4man dungeon there for class because you lacking 4 more players you can hybrid and get that one done with class. But the 8man is done better with jobs.

I'm not saying jobs can't solo i just saying class can do it better because they can hybrid and yoshi-p have said that jobs = party play class would = solo play that don't mean class can't party or job can't solo it just saying which does it better.

Not sure where you got the impression that class/jobs will be seperate tho. I might have overlooked it, dunno im not entirely up to date with the jobs~

Oh well one can dream. It'll never ever happen though. Our best bet is just to wish them to make classes more job-like so that they'd play at least slightly differently.

Here's my proposal (there are 2 options):

Either do away completely with classes and start over with jobs (may cause people to start over with combat jobs, can keep their levels and stuff for gatherer/crafter classes) kind of like you said in the OP, and what they should do is unlock other jobs like in FF Tactics, so if you get Warrior to level 10, and White Mage to level 15, maybe you unlock Paladin (just a lame example).

OR

Expand jobs on top of current classes. My idea is to have a class like Gladiator, which uses swords able to 'set' a job that is compatible with swords. So for example, Warrior, Paladin, Thief, Red Mage, etc. can be 'set' to from the Gladiator class. Likewise, the Lancer class will probably only be open to few jobs, like Dragoon, and I believe Samurai can also equip polearms in previous games.

So you would have your currently equipped weapon class, and then use that to 'set' a job. And of course, one specific job could be set to from multiple weapon classes, like Red Mage, which uses both swords and staves, could be set to from either Gladiator or Conjurer, persay.

But there's one other issue. I've never really messed with Thaumaturge before, but don't CON and THM use the same weapons? That's the only thing that would have to be worked out for this idea to work properly.

The only thing is, I think having to choose a weapon class and THEN choose what job you want to be is kind of redundant. Needless to say, I think idea #1 is better, but the only way to really make it work solidly is to completely eliminate classes and just use jobs, which would cause complications since people have worked hard to raise those levels. But then again, nobody is really losing anything at all, because no one's paid a single penny towards this game, subscription-wise, so it'd be the same as starting over, having bought the game disc yesterday, and starting a new character.
