Even if that were true, what's even the point of complaining of what could've been. It's not like we have a time machine to go back in time and revert what's already been done.

I like both races, even with their limitations, and would like to see their counterparts added, but it just hits a nerve when people bash Hrothgar as if they were a mistake that shouldn't have happened, specially considering even with their limitation, they're still more popular than other races/genders. Once again, it's done, there's nothing anyone can do about it, we can only wait and see what the devs can pull off.




Semi related: I don't know about others but if I was given the choice for Viera ears, I would've sacrificed the option to choose ear type if it meant I can wear hats normally, or at least give them physics like Miqo ears - Kind of ironic their 'different customizations' end up being their handicap.

As far back as 2013 Yoshida said that if they ever did Viera they'd probably do a different male only race as a counterpart and that's exactly what they ended up doing, for all we know Female Hrothgar and male Viera may have never been seriously considered beyond a concept art stage.

I get that people are disappointed but I really dislike this discourse around Hrothgar that if only they hadn't chosen to include them they could've/would've done <XYZ>. We don't know that at all, Stormblood added no new playable races and still did precisely nothing to further the customization of the other races.

Tbh i really don’t trust Yoshi’s word anymore because it’s constantly switching and he’s always going back on it. As far as stormblood. the expansion at least offered way more overall content in exchange for no new races whereas shb has had major content problems and problematic races.

Because our conversation is talking about back then. And it’s okay to criticize their bad decisions every once in awhile. I know people aren’t used to criticism in this community but it should be called out.

You don't have to trust what he says, you can look in the game and see he did exactly what he said he'd do. If you don't trust what he says you shouldn't believe him when he says they'll include the other genders when they ever find the resources, anyway.

You can wrap up your thinly veiled contempt for Hrothgar in however many pretty bows you want, but the fact is we honestly don't know if they would have done anything differently with Viera had they not included Hrothgar. It's conjecture at best.

There's quite a difference between "you made a bad choice and I'll be spiteful about it" and "you did a bad choice, here's how you can fix it" - resenting the creation of Hrothgars, even the potential addition of females, does nothing.

At the end of the day, one of the reasons that 1.0 was considered to be a flop was due to the presence of gender locked playable races. Yoshi-P acknowledged that and added the gender locked playable races in full when 2.0 was launched.

It didn't take him long to backtrack, though - I've posted it a few times already across this thread, but in an old interview he stated that if viera were to be added to the game, they'd be gender locked and some other single gender race would be added to compensate for the lack of viera men.

Surprise, surprise...that's exactly what ended up happening years later...almost as if it wasn't an authentic attempt to 'compromise' at all and something that was planned for a while.

My guess is that he didn't expect the demand for male viera to be quite so strong, or the backlash to be as fierce. Though either way it's worrying because it's not the only element of character customisation where things have been lost in translation. For example, despite being a very common and popular request he claimed to be 'unaware' that there was a demand for facial hair for male characters.

Which is strange...because he's in charge of FFXVI and designed the protagonist to have facial hair after the time-skip and all the promotional footage involving FFXIV's Warrior of Light/Darkness has had custom made stubble lately...

I mind SE giving us half-baked races, not fulfilling their promises of new hairstyles for both races, and continuing to stay silent about the genderlock problem. But go ahead and project. And yeah i won’t trust him because he also said way back in 2.0 they wouldnt genderlock races and here we are.

Idk how you think i resent them when i’m literally just giving out facts? I’m literally in defense of them for not getting the hairstyles they promised. People have said how they can be fixed or have asked SE for any semblance of knowledge on how theyre being taken into consideration with no response.

I also mind, I've been very critical about the way they put out both races and left them to rot for going on 2 years soon.

But I don't believe for a second they would have made additional customization for other races or any of the other things you mentioned had they not done Hrothgar, they would simply allocated the time elsewhere like they did in Stormblood.

Dude, you're saying Hrothgar should have never have existed because then Viera wouldn't have problems. That's pretty big resentment. I know because I feel the same thing about how if Viera never existed in this game, then Hrothgar would have had better customization, use of all helms, and a female variant.

But there's no point in complaining about what has happened, all we can do is hope the dev team adds the missing genders for next expansion along with the helm usage and better customization, because both races are here to stay.
