Made sure to make the comparison facing the sun as not to cherry pick, but i can say i'm not too happy with the change, didn't get hit as hard as Vieras but still
I can appreciate the raw changes like the better hair textures, but i'm having a hard time getting over the eyes and lips, the lack of the more pronounced lip gloss loses a lot of what i was going for with this character (and again that's facing the sun, with the slightest hint of shadows the lips becomes completely flat, the same goes for the scales which lost a lot of its specular surface) and the thousand yard stare looks completely souless, doesn't help that the reddish sclera makes her look stoned
A few changes in the lightning would go a long way to make it look much better, even if just a little baked lightning on the eyes and lips

I am quite disappointed.My characters' face lost their softness and don't look the same: the eyes, the mouth, the hair and the shadow/light are bad. I can barely distinguish the chin from the neck. The only thing I like is the nose for my Hyur.
I won't get into details, I think the pictures speak for themselves and are enough to show how the benchmark looks worse than the current game.
Please Square Enix, listen to us and make the graphic update an option or just fix it.

Following others' posts, I decided to edit my OP post with a list of things I noticed about my own WoL:

- And in conjunction with the above, the mouth shadow removed means that the original idea for "less lip, more mouth" on my character can no longer be achieved.
- The face feels more rounded and less sharp yet the chin makeup looks similar from the side, so I have to assume it's the cheeks or another part that's causing this.
- I personally do not like the new horns/scales, I prefer the reflectiveness of the original and feel that the texture has been made less dynamic. I also feel that the more vibrant blue exclusive to F Au Ra seen in certain lighting has been lost.
- Skin texture is very unpleasant, somehow giving the impression of a sickly flat look
- My character's hair appears to look a little different, but I think it is because of the facial changes rather than the hair itself.
- Shadows in the original added more shape to the facial structure

As a whole, I feel that my character may have relied on the old engine for her appearance and does not work in this more realistic upgrade. In particular, the excessive matte lips have taken away from my personal favorite aspect of playing my race: the distinct eyes. My eyes firstly focus on the giant lips and then the other features. And there is no way I can change this as it is now, I am using the palest option possible. I do want my WoL to be pretty, but this isn't my idea of beauty. And it certainly does not look any better in the benchmark, especially on the boat scene.

It may seem like a bit much, but as others have said before me when you spend so much time with your character, you notice their traits even down to the smallest things.

I posted prior regarding my WoL, but thought to try and take some more screenshots today and attempt to get as close to replicating the lighting as possible in each.

My main gripes are the too darkened shade near the top of the iris' beneath the eyelashes - it gives the eyes a weird sleepy(?) look and overall the vibrancy of the eye color is lost. The pupils seem a little less sharp, but that might be due (again) to the color vibrancy change.

A second issue is the corners of the mouth - something face 4 has dealt with a lot. It's most prominent in the aetherial sea lighting (and more so with a frontal picture), but the way the corners have been lifted slightly give this off-putting start to a grin...? This one could honestly just be the janky lighting in that area, though it does concern me if similar lighting is used elsewhere in the game.

A small concern I have is regarding the way the shadows fall. I know they cascade and look better overall, but at some angles it looks as if the nose just disappears partially due to no shadow falling hard enough to define it? (I can live with this, but something I noticed. It seems to affect the general structure of the face though, making some features not look as defined as before.)

Other minor nitpicks are the eyebrows being thinner (I picked the thickest options I could both times). The tattoo color - the yellow - is thinner as well, attempting to pick a deeper shade to match the original honey yellow starts either blending into the skin or turning orange.

Overall, the times he looks closest to what I figured an updated appearance would be is during certain animations when the eyes are up and able to catch lights in them. Since the normal catchlights are missing - or at least on face 4 they're so far up in the shaded part of the eye that the lighting is not catching it! - the eyes look dull. I know male miqo already suffer from their posture; the dipped head doesn't help when trying to see their face and their eyes in particular which accentuates the "soulless" look with the lack of catchlight.

I had to do a lot of screenshots angled from below to get the glimmer of light in his eyes. Otherwise they look very flat. :(

I had to make my viera in the benchmark use a shade brighter for her hair as it went from a deep reddy brown to just brown but after making that adjustment I am quite happy with her.

I have in both pictures moved so the light is hitting her face head on, which means her eyes don't look so dead as it would were it not the case. I would like to just keep that twinkle in her eye even in dim lighting.

Left Old, right new. A massive facelift. The shadowed stain is barely visible but i don't mind whatsoever. It should be there as a paint option for those who wants it (because it's basically paint, volcanic ash)

I'm unhappy with what's happened to my F Au ra. She looks more like a doll with the shape of her lips very much changed, more narrow but overly full and thick, looks like she's puckering. Combining that and the dimples make her cheeks look puffier. I liked face 4 for its angular looks and that's just gone. And the skin looks like she's had bad sunscreen applied. she looks even more like a dead fish than before in the pupils/eyes, limbal rings are pretty much gone. They did say the point was to preserve the feeling and spirit of our characters, right? I'd like my serious and capable look back.

before/after of some of my chars. i think my midlander was the most improved. no more crazy eyes. miqote and viera seem mostly the same just smoother i guess?

I might have voiced distate on the update but under ideal lighting (which I expect when gposing as well) I prefer 100% the benchmark one.

Honestly im disapointed. After getting over the first chock and trying to rescue my beloved bun boy i had to give up and experiment with other races. You have done such a good job with the Miqote but ALL options for Viera eyebrows are too thin And the beautifull eyelashes and makeup that made my characters eyes pop even on a distance are watered down and just look dull now. The face looks flat too. I can come over mutch of it but the eyebrows are completely unfixable and his new eyes looks so plain and boring in the benchmark in comparison with his current form. Didnt think i would wait for dawntrail with a sad feeling inside my chest but now i do. Please... at least, save the eyebrows and make them darker. make them pop like before.

My elezen lady came out fine. But this... this is soul-crushing.

The DT lighting entirely changed the contours of his face, so much that it does not look like the same person. The spray-paint brows which were never great in the first place are no longer even close passing now.

I've been trying to figure out exactly the issues that make my character look so unrecognizable and I think I finally have an idea. I understand that face 7 is the Hiroshi/Meteor face, and has always had some more (albeit faint) aging details than face 5. However, I feel as if the aging effects come off a little too strong. My character in particular is meant to be older, but this has aged him significantly. When I first fantastia'd to this face in 6.0, it was because I wanted the older appearance of Hiroshi/Meteor from the 5.0/6.0 trailers, not the 7.0.

• The tear duct on 7.0 face feels incredibly sharp compared to the 6.58's rounder one. I feel like this, along with the darker waterline gives the impression of a sterner expression.
• 7.0 cheeks have a sunken in effect, which adds to the more aged up look.
• The 7.0 mustache has a different shape than 6.58 version, along with the beard not appearing as dark, leading to (as some have mentioned) the beards almost disappearing with lighter hairs.
• The lips have a pallid appearance, and the upper lip looks thinner.
• No screenshot, my apologies, but the beard mesh clips underneath the jaw. This can be seen in their standard idle pose in the character creator.
• My biggest issue - and this is across races and not just for Midlander - is that the sclera feels too bright, too white and along with the new eye catch, the eyes look like marbles. They also slightly change the eye color to feel lighter.

There are some features I do like however. The addition of the nasolabial fold, for example! The eyebrows feel more filled out, which seems to be a rare change as many eyebrows look thinner. I can see the translation of features, how the nose and (mostly) the mouth carried over. The eye shape (sans tear duct and the waterline) carried over down to the eyelid. The under eye wrinkles, the crows feet. I love these features. But with the addition of the skin texture, he's giving "forgot to wear sunblock at the beach a few too many times."

Cross-posting from a different thread & wanted to add more thoughts. I noticed the smile is changed entirely and wanted to show the mustache shape change (I spelled mustache wrong in the image, apologies). My lines aren't perfect, since I'm using a mouse but hopefully they show how tubercle of the lips is lost (losing the smile's V shape) and now is only a line.

I do miss the old lips a lot, I think the new ones look so stiff. They lack definition and the dimples have been removed, making them appear much smaller. The gloss is barely there.
While the new eyes are beautiful they unfortunately appear "dead" unless in the right angle to be hit by the reflection, which I worry might cause problems in gpose.

I will most likely get used to it, but I really miss the features of my Au Ra's face that defined her and it makes me a bit sad I might have to adjust. I've been playing on her for a long time and have never changed her appearance because I like the way she looks so much.

I would be quite happy about how my girl looks... if they hadn't completely changed the shape of her lips -.-

The smirk she gives when on the boat looks cursed - i did test out the other faces for comparison and while they all kinda looked like the plotting world domination, face 4 with her new lips looks creepy af...

I did this comparison for both my OG Elezen model and my current Viera one. The Elezen is such an upgrade. Everything from the curve of her ears to the richness of her eyes is an 1000% upgrade. I'm seriously so happy they did this and that she finally looks the way I always envisioned her. (Benchmark on the Left and current model on the Right.)

I desperately wish I had the same positive feels about my Viera. I feel like the eyes now look unnaturally bright and look ghoulish next to her darker skin tone. Her lips also changed from having a defined cupids bow to being sort of an amorphous blob. Can't say I'm a fan of losing the subtlety in the makeup either. It looks somewhat better in the Benchmark game footage though the eyes still look radioactive. This might be Squeenix's way of saying this is the expansion to go Elezen again.

= Has higher lashes density at the corners, akin to fake lashes vs Subtle Originals
= Eyeliner is too intense in the Benchmark while the original doesn't have anywhere as heavy of an eyeliner, which gives a different look.
= Eyebrows No.4 Softened up- needs to be shades darker than the hair to slightly pop- some skin color/hair combos will look bad I think- I have light skin so it's okay.
= New Eyeshine looks really pretty but when it's absent it looks really horrific.

= Nose smudge is greatly reduced/faded which is the defining feature of Face 4.
= Nose job- thinning of the nose bridge [here] and straightening up of the nose profile. [I really liked that nose because it wasn't straight and I thought that 'flaw' was really cute ]

Mouth Type 1.
= Cupid's Bow is totally a different shape.
= Cupid's Bow catches light too often [glossy/doll look].
= Philtrum went from being subtle to being more pronounced.
= Lower lip is way more defined in the Benchmark vs Old, it has a slightly different shape.
= Mouth lost its original shape/charm- no longer has that soft/blended innocent look.
= No lipstick option has a sheen/glossy finish and nowehere near light/pink as the original was.
= Corners of the mouth catch way too much light [Glossy/Doll look].
= Please return my girl's fangs back, thanks.
= Parted lips are gone which I found charming...

Skin
I have so many issues with the skin, the current skin doesn't look too different under different lights however Benchmark skin feels as if it's absorbing the surrounding light and reflecting it. I don't think someone's skin color changes hues that much. I feel like despite using the same skintone, my character looks yellowish/green in certain lighting situation. It feels like my character is abit like a lamp or a wax candle and the light is shining THROUGH her.

I feel really discouraged by this...It's not the end of the world for me but I'd be really happy if the mouth issues are at least resolved...I really miss my girl's nose and parted lips and cute nose smudge.. She looked so innocent and delicate. I loved her little 'flaws', it saddens me to see them "fixed" maybe her cute bumpy nose was just a symptom of low polygons and her parted lips some kind of mistake oTL but I really loved it...

I'm one of the lucky ones playing a male miqo and while I'm overall pretty pleased with how he turned out, I still have some grievances on behalf of everyone else. He looked better in the trailer thankfully, but that static indoor lighting is not doing his lips favors. I honestly think they got lips wrong for everyone -some flat out changing shape- but I mostly think I just liked the way they were shaded before, if that makes sense. I'll need to mess with my shaders because now the game finally has some color of its own and alter some of his colors with fanta to get them back to the way they were, but I'm mostly hoping they're listening to everyone who got everything changed about their WoL :/

It's crazy to me how wildly different the new model looks depending on the environment. My old model looked consistently like himself in good or bad angles/lighting. That's definitely not the case for the new model.

When I saw the comparison above (left = old, right = new) I instantly thought, "wtf happened to you!?" It's almost comical how bad the new version looks to me. I played around a bit with different angles and environments and got very different results.

I actually love his new look in this comparison (left = old, right = new). Some of his facial features changed, but it looks like a proper glowup while still looking like himself. All of these comparisons have identical character appearance stats (I had to double check because it looked so different depending on the environment). Hopefully when DT drops we end up having more consistency and people can feel good about their WoL. I've had mine since 2.0 and I empathize with people who are distraught with their character's appearance.

I don't currently plan on not playing viera on my main char once DT comes around but I'm also not too impressed with how my character looks right now. I normally play on ps5 and don't use shaders even on my laptop so it's not because I'm not used to seeing my character without shaders or anything like that.

I think what's really getting to me is the eyes. In the current version, the eyes look bright and wide and show a kind of life to them; in the benchmark version, the eye shape and the way that the eyelashes angle a bit down makes her look a little more dead inside. Also the face shape/jaw looked a bit more defined in the current version vs the benchmark.


The rest of the graphics i'm seeing are great though - the details of the hairstyles, the quality of the environment in the benchmark character creator. I just wish i liked the way my character looked a little more, but it just has this different vibe right now. Maybe i'll get used to it but...

i play my characters since 2016 and they stayed the same since then but with the benchmark they all look too drastically different to be still my original characters, i doubt the free fantasia will do anything since striking features or charm points are simply gone.

Also the skintextures/shadows on skin look very dirty and pixelated. the skin is too waxy. It's a shame they even touched the faces to begin with... personally i think the devs should have stayed with just changing lighting physics, textures of the surroundings, make everything a bit more HD and don't change whole faces. They might have done the characters objectively better but subjectively worse bc of the lost charm points and the uniqueness some of those faces had.

Quality is nice. I switched to Face 2 Aura because of the pouty/plump lips. It doesn't have that feel anymore and looks more like a copy of Au'ra face 1. Wish that would be fixed :(

This is a comparison of the new Face 1 and new Face 2. They look very similar now - almost like they used Face 1 as a template and changed it very slightly :(

This is the current face 2 compared with the new face 1. There's a noticeable distinction in the mouth and eyes. I love the roundness of the current face 2 which is not really there in the new version.

I ran 7 characters through the benchmark, 4 which I play regularly. I absolutely love my Au Ra, but with this update I can't even look at her anymore. The lighting is horrible, but not sure if that's just a benchmark thing. Features though seriously need adjusting. Specifically the pupils. Also the color saturation on the scale and horns needs to go down. Even the lower eyelids seem to bulge out too much now.
