Hmm, yes yes. I did find it interesting that the Final Fantasy Ultimania Archive Volume 3 which contains FF12 lore information comes out in May - the original lore book gave us information on male Viera and confirmed that they exist. Perhaps the new one will have updated information and images? The release is after fanfest of course, so they wouldn't be spoiling us. Just me grasping at straws, lol.

They could just give us female locked Viera, and we would not have been lied to.
They could give us male Viera as well, and we would have not been lied to.
They could give us a male locked race in addition to female locked Viera, and we would be in shady territory. They have said "The Viera will most likely be the last race we add to FFXIV." Of course, this isn't an absolute.

It's been over a year but wasn't there a similar 'non-answer' during the lead up to Stormblood's fanfests? I seem to remember something being left ambiguous that pissed people off majorly but for the life of me I can't remember what it was.

Look, I love a good skeptic look at things that keep expectations in check but try as I will I just can not find one reason he wouldn't just say all Playable Bunnies will be female if that's the case.

It's all just trolly set up for the next fest. IMO very much like how he keeps saying they're likely/ probably the "last race". I whole heartedly believe the Blufever leaks as he's been on the money about everything (and the like 2 things that weren't completely accurate turned out to be a date that was pushed back or names that they later decided to change. Seems like people think he worked on the translation team). The last 2 things to confirm are healer Dancer and 2nd new race. I personally see this talk as him setting up the 2nd race reveal cause why even bother to bring it up?

Personally I have no horse in the race. I'm gonna play as a bunny girl no matter what and couldn't care less about the males. In fact a 2nd new race would annoy me seeing as Lions would imply "Big cats" and I play Femroe ... it's already hard enough knowing I'm jumping ship but to be tempted by a race of BIG CATS would be hell :/. (Who know's, maybe they're tiny cats with big cat features ... or a human sub race difference but for the current cats. The humans are, by all means, 2 different races but called sub races. I could see bigger cats that walk on tippy toes like the bunnies with big cat features being a new "sub race")
But even I have to look at that and see that it's as much confirmation you can give without revealing it.

I actually think male characters have more variety in designs. Most of the races are fairly 'equivalent' between the genders: Midlander = generic human; Highlander = muscular; Elezen = tall and thin; Miqo'te = slightly smaller than Midlander and Lalafell = potato.

The outliers are Roegadyn and Au Ra. While they have their unique traits, female Roegadyn are built similarly to Highlanders, and Au Ra similar to Midlander/Miqo'te - but the males are different shapes that aren't comparable to any of the other races. Both tending towards the 'hyper-masculine', as you say, but it's still a wider variety of actual designs available. They also have more opportunities for a range of character ages - though it's arguable whether that's a good thing or not, as few people use the older faces available, and it narrows the options for other designs.

Overall there are still plenty of designs possible to have a "non-hyper-masculine" male character. Midlander, Miqo'te and Elezen all tend towards 'softer', less imposing characters - though of course it's still very dependent on exact face settings and clothing. That goes for the other 'tougher' races as well.

I made a male Au Ra alt with the specific intent of making him as "un-fierce" as possible, and I think it worked - granted, he's still seven fulms tall and muscular, but I wouldn't consider him hyper-masculine, even if the default Au Ra design is.

I definitely thought she was just talking about the ears. Hopefully a design with the ears a bit further apart so they look more like extra-large elf ears - they seem quite awkwardly placed so high on the head like that.

Just going from the pictures - while their ears do seem to be on the short end, it looks like they're not actually cat-like, but just partly hidden in their 'mane' so the part that sticks out looks cat-like.

That's my line of thinking on the male designs too - I think they' have potential as an interesting mix of a 'feminine-ish' base design with the 'strong warrior' build implied by what lore we have. Some of the old concept art is along these lines, and I think it looks like an unusual and interesting character design.

That's definitely an option too, but I feel like we'd end up with something closer to male Miqo'te in that case - not the "cute bunny boy" design from the concept art that people keep bringing up hopefully.

In any case, that concept art was designed as a counterpoint to the equally cute bunny girl standing next to him - and we didn't get female Viera in that style, so I greatly doubt we'd get that male concept either. At a "free to go anywhere with ideas" point, there was nothing wrong with it, but now that we've seen the designs for 'our' female Viera and heard the lore regarding the males, he would look very out of place.

(And yes, we "could" still get a second tribe with cute designs for both genders, but it doesn't seem to add up with what the Dramaturge described. He only said the tribes were dark- and light-skinned, and with only the single description of their culture, there seems little reason to expect such a different design.)

I hope the "they'll be the last race we introduce" not be a trollsy setup for "but we'll introduced this male-only race 5 minutes earlier, thus keeping Viera as the last one"

This logic needs to end. There's already enough pandering to the female characters in game already. Getting a male version of Viera won't change this and not giving it to us will simply exacerbate it.

I mean, not all of us want to play as females. I hate playing as a female toon in all RPGs, I hate hip swing, I hate female animation run and I'm certainly not a fan of the chest physics. So yeah. I prefer to play as a male toon.

As a wise person once said, if I'm going to be staring at someone's behind for hours at a time - then it's going to be of something I like. If dudes can do it, why can't girls? And of course, the dudes who like themselves a good looking chap to stare at. Gotta share the love.

Point being I shouldn't have to be swept under the rug in regards to my favourite race because I don't want to be the female and would prefer to be the male. Gatekeeping sucks.

The "Desert Sapphire" is Rabanastre, I assume? In any case, the core of the statement is that in the past he has not seen a male Viera in the city, but that doesn't mean it can't change.

That said, some people were saying earlier that it doesn't matter what the normal lore is for male Viera, because the WoL is special and might choose to leave regardless? I think the other side of that concern is that, even though in a single-player game you can make the argument that your special character is an exception, in this multiplayer game the world is populated by other player-characters (who are not the Warrior of Light in your version of the story), and suddenly that population includes a noticable number of male Viera. Even if they're rare characters in the long run, it's still "above zero" and that's not what fits in with the lore they've written for the Viera.

Of course they could have written different lore, but they have their own reasons for doing this - whatever they are.

I don't really get that logic - I don't think I look at my character much at all during gameplay. You're looking past them into the distance at where you're going, or looking around you in battle. It would be like the equivalent of staring at your feet the whole time you're walking, instead of looking at where you're going.

You see them more in cutscenes, of course.

This line here, however; 'You see, the Viera follow a strict code called the ‘Green Word’ 'that binds them to their land and prohibits all contact with the outside world unless absolutely necessary'. This gives some wiggle room that those who to stay true to the 'Green Word' can actually leave and seek help if necessary - I imagine this would include the forest telling them to leave to do WoL things and 'adventure'.

Yet again when speaking about the males in regards to why they're not around, it's also past tense. And even then, if the Viera males are like the females in build and have some feminity - it's not outlandish to think that the males WERE there - but not wanting to be seen.

What gets me the most, however, is rather what is not said. If more females leave the wood; then what is to stop a pregnant Viera leaving the wood? Or one refusing to give up her male kits and thus leaves with them before an older male can take them? Shrug

More so, if you have only a small amount of males; the first line of defence. If the Empire was going to attack the jungle with large numbers... well, if all the males are killed - then there goes the Viera race as soon as the females start succumbing to old age. Doesn't seem all that likely that we're going to see bunny genocide.

All in all, we don't know, because this guy has been out of the loop. By the way, he speaks he has been for a while. The hint is that he mentions change, its subtle - but the fact its there speaks volumes.

My camera is positioned in such a way that I can see all of my characters back. I don't like zooming in intimately. Cutscenes you do indeed so much more. And that's the fun part. The logic comes from other games where the camera is smack bang on the toons booty and if you're not into what you're seeing it's a bit of a downer. A nice example of this is NIER; Automata.

While I am happy to be a female Viera since I am a girl, I would be utterly pissed off if my Boyfriend couldn't be a Male Viera with me as we always liked matching our race and even gear when possible. I keep a glimpse of hope that they will be reveal at Japan Fanfest and we will both play the game even if it's not available but I really do hope they will be available because I won't be Viera if he can't be one as well.

Gender Lock isn't why 1.0 turned out the way it did.

And Tera devs actually credit the Elin for being what saved the game. They have a culture in that game that loves them some Elin toons. It's why they get the most classes ... so they're pretty much riding the back of a gender locked race for profits.

I'd be pretty confident to say that they will reveal male Viera based on that, otherwise it'd lead to just greater disappointment for those who want it.

I think the reason behind this is that if they gender locked races in the past and then removed those gender locks because people hated it. Why go backand slap a gender lock on a race - especially one that hasn't had a reveal of the male version? There's big money in that. The first time we would see the male ever in game. To me that outweighs the whole; 'pander to the wifu', no 'pander to everyone who likes the Viera race and lore' is more like it; that's where the money is.

I have my camera pulled back as far as it goes. Being close in to the character feels uncomfortable, and harder to see what's around me.

Funny thing with first-person vs third-person games - third-person actually gives you a closer equivalent to the field of vision you have in reality, in terms of being able to see something off to the side of where you're standing. First-person games are like tunnel-vision, and you can only see the view that's framed by the screen. The few times I've played first-person games, I find it quite disconcerting.

I'm more interested in my character's face looking nice than their body. (Well, face and costume. But not of the revealing variety.)

I generally agree with the sentiment, but this reveal doesn't exist in a vacuum. It comes along with a rickety history of how SE treats its male characters and their glamour. That one lone quote saying we'd see more in the Tokyo Fanfest makes me think more along what you do, but they could've easily said something like that too in a Q&A or something in fanfest itself. Just half a bone thrown that this isn't everything we'll see to Viera would've gone a long way, just half an acknowledgement. But they didn't, they dodged any questions regarding Viera in the panels that I saw, and the climate is that we're in a situation where Viera being gender locked is something a lot of people think is actually possible, which is really something SE shouldn't have let happen. If bunny boys exist, what's the harm of showing or at least acknowledging them? If bunny boys don't exist, all they're doing right now is stringing people along by giving us hope we'll see them in the next FanFest, only to break those hopes then.

You must be the kind of person that reads a statement then replies without actually thinking about what you just read. "Look at 1.0 and how well gender-locking worked there." This had nothing to do with the reason 1.0 wasn't successful. It was regarding the gender-locking OF 1.0. People were not happy about it at all. They complained often about not being able to make a male Miqo'te or a Female Roe. Nowhere in my statement did I say -- or even imply -- that 1.0 failed because of it, and if that's what you took away from it, then I believe that tells us everything we need to know about your argument.

My big issue with this statement is that it's not confirmation one way or another. We know we're getting Viera... they just revealed that. Are you telling me that revealing male Viera is going to be something worthy of the biggest and final Fanfest for Shadowbringers? It's been mentioned that in the past they revealed concept art for both genders of Viera, however, it's rather curious that at the art panel, there wasn't even a sketch present; not even a quote saying "it's in the works" or anything of the sort.

There's lots of reason to why they weren't announced yet.
And you should and need to aknowledge that they can have a basemodel without any bones(hence it can't move) and already work on this. If it's not able to be showed yet, they don't HAVE to. Neither do they have to mention them if it's not ready yet.

But they also didn't include a slider that said "female only", so it is not an absolute.
And a question got dodged with "wait".

It's a big MAYBE.

I think we should all see that it's that and not just jump to conclusions without it being stated? At least i think so.

It is, probably, though they did say that younger Viera are basically androgynous until early teens. As for concept art, they showed in the past male Viera designs as well, which is why I'm personally more annoyed with their PR tactics rather than honestly despaired. They're probably banking on the disdain to generate more buzz and word of mouth, and then they can be the savior heroes when they finally reveal the obvious male counterpart.

But if that's concept art, i rather think it's more like the "they look like young elezen" variant. Feol, maybe? They DID mention that there is a versiont hat is more young elezenlike
Doubt they do concept art of children, it was alongside the other ones back then, so i assume it's just a variation.

I don't really understand the "young Elezen" comment, to me Alphinaud and Alisaie just look like humes with pointy ears, they are not disproportionate, why not just call it "young humes" ? I am sure it will just look like a hume with bunny ears any way lmao
