It's no secret the servers needed to be upgraded, that is a fact, and I fully agree with the decision to finally do so. However, this entire move has been shady because of, yes, radio silence from the get-go. Yoshi-P's initial post clearly shown they had already decided on a location but to this day we have not had official confirmation on the location.

Pardon the conspiracy theory, but it's almost as if they knew it would be received in a negative way if it was revealed to be California.

...or, they might understand how insanely shady their fanbase is, and are intentionally not talking about the location for actual security reasons.

Yes the weather effects it also, us is a 3rd world county when it comes to internet. The reason for this is because of the monopolies here and because of that, lack of competition get to overcharge for the low quality service people in the USA do get. This is why google fiber became a thing, to stir the pot to get these companies to work.

Sorry I don't really understand. I heard the servers were originally in Canada and I honestly have dreadful internet service but am able to play just fine. Unless your using wireless the I don't see a problem with the switch.

You might be an hour behind on the fact that it's probably not Cali and if that's true, everyone has been testing pings to the wrong location. The routing tables are going to take a bit now that the lobby url is actually replying to pings now.

EU never got official confirmation that the servers were put into Frankfurt specifically, all that we knew was the server data was hopping across the pond to European soil and being hosted there instead.

I think them not disclosing it has to do with some legal mumbo jumbo, but I wouldn't know, really.

If these are in fact the correct ip addresses, then my ping has gone from a reasonably good 80-90 to a fast 40-50. Good news for west coast players for sure.

This is why SE gave out FREE transfers to EU players way back so they can play on their datacenter. It's not SE's fault EU players decide to play on NA servers (for whatever reason) after making a datacenter just for EU. You're not entitled to a free transfer that boat has sailed.

Ah I see my apologies then I just looked it up and yeah it was that way. Could've sworn when they moved it they gave EU players the chance to move there, but yeah I agree they should have done it the other way around for sure. Still though it's unfortunate but it's the risk someone takes when they step out of their region and take the chance playing in another.

I believe you, it's just that it's still going all the way out to Sacramento when I do a tracert. I know enough about networking to be dangerous in the advice I give and assumptions I make- not enough to grasp the full reason why. If the geolocation is Michigan, why am I getting routed out to Sacramento before it resolves?

That makes a little more sense.

On the other hand, Frankfurt is about as optimal as a location as it could have been to host the datacenter. Europe's infrastructure is much, MUCH better compared to the United States, in addition to it being in close to the most ideal location for the European playerbase as possible.

People are scared because the infrastructure in the United States is hot garbage in the first place, on top of the already notoriously unreliable routing that the majority of people have had side effects from in this game.

While I love the CA choice for myself (12ms ping), it is obviously not a good choice for the health of ANY online game they intend to offer within north and south america. The physics of the situation pretty much dictates Texas -- mid-southern USA as the ideal place to offer the best potential latency to both continents. SE knows this.

Our new datacenter seems to be NTT/RagingWire's CA3 spot. Why didn't they choose the TX1 spot? My bet is that TX1 is not ready; they *just* opened it. I'd further speculate that there could easily be either another move planned to TX1 or future/other games planned for TX1 site if NTT does a good job with the CA3 site. Another move would depend greatly on how smooth this one goes for them. If they find it to be cheap and painless and SB really takes off, it could move again in 6~12 months. By then, the TX1 site will be ready.

I live in BC (Canadian West Coast).
On the previous server location (in the same country), I was getting ~120 ms ping with no packet loss. Not that nice (compared to the 15 ms i got when I was living in Japan and playing on a JP server), but playable.
I pinged the server from work (business line), and I was happy to see a constant 35 ms ping! Great !
Then I went back home (non business line). And I am crying...

rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 28.498/106.945/956.069/89.694 ms

same "average" ping as before (even if the new server location is 2000 miles closer to before), and packet losses. I know this will make the game unplayable...

The person is wrong, the trace route to NTT's CA2 Sacramento data center is correct.

Many people who don't know what they are talking about confusing WHOIS vs a trace route. I'll try to explain it in simple terms.

WHOIS is like the internet phonebook "white pages". Like when you buy a .com name, you have the choice to publish who administers and pays for that domain. The address information is published for anyone to see. This has no bearing where the server(s) for that domain lives. You can protect your assets by just putting a corporate address of your company as the white listing. But your server might actually be in another country.

Traceroute is basically sending a heartbeat from your PC and internet connection to see the actual pipelines it has to go through to get the end connection. This method reports every pipeline hop you have to go through including the end of the tunnel. This is how you actually discover the server(s) you end at because internet backbones and data centers generally use some city codes as part of their pipeline addresses because they have a lot of them.

I will give Raikki some knowledge in that I am looking at stuff provided online as much as everyone else is. But if the two updates I've seen today with the IP being claimed in Cali and then being claimed in Michigan, those routing changes need to be updated across all ISPs. If the backbone you connect to through your ISP knew the path to Cali from earlier in the day, until it receives an updated path, it's keeps going to Cali first and then is forwarded to Michigan. When I first started working for a local internet company, we told people DNS updates could take 24 hours and moving IP addresses don't happen instantaneously either.

Yeah... that's definitely her Internet provider or connection. I live in Montreal and got 103 with Bell Media.

I think their first step is to get the server up and running, after which they can let the routing tables update their paths and costs. Even after the servers come up tonight, it could be hours, or days until we get a firm location indication.

Based on the ping test results I'm seeing, I suspect california is correct. We'll see.

Those ip locator sites are a joke. Try this one https://www.iplocation.net/ which will query multiple services at the same time. Using neolobby02.ffxiv.com [204.2.229.9] I see...

All at the same time. Interestingly, none say anything about California, but at least 3 of the services they list show that the DB they use was updated either May 1st or 2nd meaning those results wouldn't reflect reality anyway because the servers just moved within the last 48 hours.

On the other hand tracert doesn't attempt to tell you where the IP actually is, but the names some of those hops resolve to...

So, as for those ip locator sites, it's like they put a map of the US on the wall, have a 5 year old toss some darts on it and return that as a result. That, or because the servers changed IP addresses as part of the move, those locations listed on those sites might be rough locations of the previous owners of said IP addresses.

I also get Seattle to San Jose to Sacramento in the tracert for now, or Philly to 'asbn' Virginia to San Jose to Sacramento. At the moment, the IP is routed to Sacramento. Maybe in 2 hours it'll change. (shrug)

I call shenanigans. I live about as far away from Montreal as you can get in Canada without being in the territories or on Vancouver Island, and my ping to Montreal was never higher than 100. With the move, this has now dropped to ~40-50 since it appears the new data center is located on the west coast.

The only way those numbers you give could be occurring are if she is in eastern/Atlantic Canada and her ISP is in need of a BIG upgrade. Heck, I don't even get close to 480 ping to the EU data centers and they're almost as far away as you can get from where I am and still be in the northern hemisphere.

I wonder how many Kentucky players are here? Would be the best place to put the server.

To put my perspective in this, I live in Hawaii. I didn't have much trouble playing FFXIV despite the servers being in Montreal at the time (which is very far from Hawaii BTW).

The game ran smoothly, I can dodge aoes, and I can do my rotations smoothly.

I am not sure if a location change will significantly affect my gameplay.

from 175 ms to 290-295ms, well guess I had my fun.

My ping to Montreal was 25ms. My ping to Sacramento is 89ms... more than triple the amount. May have to quit the game if it is unplayable now.
