It'd never happen because, as you realized, Garleans can't use magic and it'd take too much development time to make a bunch of new classes only exclusive for that race.

I think their argument could have been better if they said the female Au Ra body is pretty much a Miqo'te's (face being similar to a Hyur) and the males is a toned Elezen (their face being original, though).
I really hope that is not the case, otherwise people will ask "Why can't X and Y also be retconned as well?" I like things in the story to have some consistency or at least have a reallllllll good reason on why something is changing. Not to mention in the Garlean's case, it'd be weird for people who are starting out to see Garlean players having access to magic and are left wondering why the ones they're fighting in the story can't use any magic.
That won't happen because Ferne all but came out and said the Garleans cannot use magic simply because they are physically and aetherically incapable of doing it due to a quirk of biology (it's the reason why they resorted to creating technology/magitek - it's to compensate for their lack of magical ability). No matter how hard a native-born Garlean may want or try, they will never be able to manipulate aether into magic - their bodies simply do not allow it (and in fact would probably kill them if they tried).
That point alone is probably the big reason why Garleans will never be playable (even ignoring the fact that they've been portrayed as the game's antagonists since the very beginning in 1.0, but I digress).
Though when you think about it, that's more than what a Viera would have. SE will most likely not design them with their "interesting" feet and rabbit ears can already be purchased (for ladies only).
I just want way more options for the current races. Like Au Ra females having cute and fierce presets instead of just cute. I would actually play Roe if they had better face options. Females with a little muscle actually looks great. Especially for WAR
I doubt we'll ever get a new playable race at this point. It would be a miracle if Viera were added to the game though.
I prefer more options for the existing races.
I would love to see Vieras added (especially the males, for... reasons).
But I would prefer to add more diversity inside the present races (especially the face shapes, 4 is way too little), and an option to mix races
I agree. I would love to see more options for the current races. Or even new tribes for each current race.
Lalafell.. Dunesfolk, Plainsfolk and... Mountfolk?
Hyur.. Midlander, Highlander and.. Lowlander?
I don't know, but I would be very happy seeing more variety in the races we have now.
More faces would be nice, though I have to say I'm happy with my current one. Variety is good! People tend to think Femroes only have one decent face (fierce) and it's the most popular but my default one looks a bit derp, until it's tweaked. I'm one of two or three I've seen on my world with my face. :P
Regarding Viera, I adored them in XII, I mean, bunny people! <3 But I know everyone will be teasing me about not changing to it when I'll never foresake my Femroe - so I'm very much conflicted. :P
+1 for more races
+10000000000000 for more options for current races (come on SE, increase the sliders (specially bust!!!), include butt/package slider (so everyone can has eye candy), more face, nose, mouth, color grid options (heck, remove the grid and let us use rgb color), I think everyone will be ok even if it takes our char twice the time to load so don't excuse you with the char data stuff.
Im not asking for our chars to look like the BnS ones, but at least give us the options to have varied body types as FF franchise have done before.
The increase of tribes is a good idea for this.
Said it before but will add here, I will gladly take more customization of the current races over adding another one. Seeing as were set to basically humanoid races, I don't see how much more we can alter to make them look different. The Viera would be a start but the foot structure would either force a change to make them like the rest or force to hide it in someway.
Just gonna post these threads here, to spread my evil agenda. >:-D
Suggestion: More Character Creation Options, Please
Suggestion: Differentiate Playable Race's Tribes More
I would love to have Viera as a playable race though... >w>
You know what ? I think the best way to add more diversity for the current races is to change one of the sub races for every races, and then you add the new faces thanks to the sub-race.
Because, now, only Hyurs have diversity between their subraces, and when I say diversity, I say HUGE diversity : the two Hyurs sub races are completly different : from faces to height, why the other races look so much similar ?
I mean, the only differences between default sub-races are :
-color of the hair
-color of the skin
BUT you can change all of that, so it's pointless.
You want a proof ? Guess my character's sub-race. Oh you can't :) (I don't even remember my sub-race, that's pretty sad, what's the point to split a race in two if both parts look the same ?)
We want new faces and more diversity inside the sub races.
But whould that mean this is a sub race of Lalafell?
.Aetherochemical Compound 123
http://ff14angler.com/img/icon/f0388l.png
This biologically engineered biomass can be found on Azys Lla.
Unlike anything else on Eorzea, compound #123 is thought to be another of the Allagan Empire's failed chimerical creations. The creature seems to be harmless enough, feeding only on the tiny water lice which inhabit Azys Lla's aetherochemical pools. Its outer hide, however, has given many a naturalist pause as it bears a texture almost identical to that of a Lalafell's skin
Viera is still a option, the question should be: Will the new races have another petite female and tall muscle male or will it be something else?
I love the artwork for female and male Viera, but I have a feeling we will be getting another hyur + (random animal parts) as the new race.
I don't see how the argument that we don't need another cutesy race like miqo and auri applies to the prototypical viera. I agree we don't need another cute race but what about the concept art is indicative of them being cutesy? The males look relatively tribal and bulky, kind if like the auri males without the awful posturing and edge while the females look very mature as compared to most of the races, similar to the the elezen and rho females without having anatomy so bad that davinci would vomit at the sight of it.
What you're failing to take into account is how much of their uniqueness would end up on the cutting room floor for the sake of easier gear rigging. I mean, SE reduced the sizes of characters' butts to make it easier to rig gear.Their unique digitigrade foot structure would be the first thing to go because they wouldn't fit any of our current shoes. Basically, it would end up as another Hyur-with-animal-parts race with the most unique thing about them being facial features, ears, and a fluffy tail.
You are absolutely right.
With Viera they'll just add ears and maybe a animal-like nose. Otherwise you'l get what the Au Ra get. You know the exact opposite of their concept phase. Hell they scrapped the concept phase for Au Ra for the cutesy animu Dragon template they had for females. Males got crapped on big time and got a mixed Elezen design.

Actually with Viera I am guessing they will be Elezen with bunny pieces attached. And they'll probably be super sultry and aloof, since in FF12 they are pretty much all super refined, and not as "cutesy" as Miqo. They did also say that the reason why we got AuRa instead of Viera or the wolf race is /because/ of their feet, and they did not want to re-design every leg and foot gear in the game to fit those race's entirely new leg design. So they aren't exactly hiding the fact that they do not want to keep the digitigrade feet. We can only hope they actually break the mold though, if they do it once they can do it again for another race. Once they make pants to fit Viera it would be super easy to make pants fit wolf people.
Just another race with human features, nothing special.
Why can't we focus on the races we already have? The customization is already sorely limited as it is.
Want to be able to glamour to the beast tribes. Want to be a Vath!
To me they all look like humans lol
Miq ote hyur with cat eats
Rogaedyn, super buff hyur with blue skin
Elezen, Taller hyur with long ears.
Au ra, Hyur with scaley thingies.
Lalafell, Midget hyurs.

Bangaa would be nice.
or i'd take the good old burmecians!

Really still hoping for Viera, AND a more beast like race like any of the beast tribes. ANY OF them PLUS viera would be so nice!
Eh, I dunno. We have plenty of "bunny" gear in the game already. Wouldn't it be rather redundant to also have a new rabbit-like race? I wanted to see a more reptilian styled humanoid, but we got Au'ra instead which are suppose to actually be more demonic based than reptilian, even though they still appear more human than demon or reptile.
I hope the next race we get leans more towards beastial than humanoid in appearance.
Add me to the crowd that would wish for something a bit less "Human with...." and more "Animal that stands upright." I'll add in a new thought for a rodent-type race. EQ2 had one, and while I personally preferred halflings in that game, I loved seeing the ratongas running around.
Devs have said in the past that they aren't going to add viera for the reason that is joked about by Magius' linked picture (though that didn't stop them with the Au Ra, so... I don't know how commited they are). I'm all for more races, but lets be serious here. How many 'hyur/elezen with one or two animal features' do we need? I'd sooner welcome mixed races than another kemonomimi.
Append - Also, this is some hella necromancy here.
The main issue is that the-powers-that-be don't seem to want to deviate from the same Hyur-shaped cookie cutter they have been using, due to the amount of extra work they would have to do to modify older gear. I'm sure they're still kicking themselves keeping Lalas and Male Roes in the game because of how proportionally different they are to the other races.
Personally, I think mixed races are an interesting idea and would welcome Vieras into the game as well.
New race goblins?
I already said it in all the threads talking about future races but i want another race with females as tall or taller than femroes, muscular too and whatever they want to add to it that makes it being a new race.

Still wantz. Haters and negative Nancys can suck a Heavenward. :p
Even if they add Viera, they will change certain features like their feets. Yoshida has already said that, because of armour design + time, they want races and gender to be similiar, so the chances of having the Viera as we know and love, will not happen. At best we will get a female Hyur with bunny ears, some fur and different type of nose. Another issue is that they are going to design the genders and races after the most played current races and gender. During 2.0 this was female Miqote and Hyur, hence why the female Miqote and Au Ra look very alike.
Assuming they are going to follow the status quo and SE has shown with FFXIV that they prefer to have one working formula, we will see a :
1. A Hyur with animial parts like Miqote or Au Ra, the females will look like your typical anime highschool girl.
2. Males will look very different from the females, they will be either too tall or have different body shape, like with Au Ra and Roegadyn.
3. If they wear full body armour, unless they have extra parts like tails etc, you will hardly notice the difference during combat.
4. They will play safe and make it look similiar to the current races.
Just before Heavensward was released, SE released some of their artwork and personaly I think, if there was going to be a Viera added to the game, they will look more like this:
