I think Square doesn't have a good option outside of "everything modded isn't allowed"
Even with the people who use mods that only affect their gameplay (mare/graphic changes/re-shade), it's still an MMORPG in the end, and it would be impossible to say "these mods are good" and denounce the ones that are blatantly taking away from the spirit of the game (like the people who used a satellite to clear TOP)
As players, we can say "oh these people are really breaking the spirit of the game" while modding hats on Vierra all we want, but it's not going to change the fact that per the TOS, it's both equally reprehensible and against TOS. Just like Bards with their MIDIs.
But the second that a player, uses those plugins/mods, and purposefully impacts another player's experience, that's not ok at all (which is what the meaning of the first post on this topic was, players forcing or being blatant with plugin/mods that impacts other player's experiences)
Am I going to quit if Square gets rid of the ability to do any plugins/mods, no, because that's their intent with the spirit of the game.
For XIV I think subs are still a sizeable amount of income, even if not it is at least a stable and predictable amount of regular cash flow.
The cash shop is probably a lot more volatile, sure you have whales that just buy anything you serve them but most people aren't buying all the junk they sometimes throw on the shop...like consumable housing items for 5 bucks.
So the income from the cash shop can swing wildly depending on whether or not they put something popular on the store this month.
Some quick research tells you otherwise.
Mods can't just add new things to the game, they can only visually replace existing ones. Most mod users, as with any other software, have so little knowledge of how this works that they can't choose the item to replace themselves, so if the thing that "looks way better than anything in game" requires them to buy a mogstation outfit they will just do so.
Fun fact time, in Q1 of 2023, FFXIV Subs accounted for more revenue for Square Enix than their other titles, making a total of 27.3 Billion Yen in just the first quarter of the fiscal year.
Sadly they don't have any data on just the optional items, however the slide does state that it is only counting paying subscriber numbers:
Source (First time doing a Hyperlink in BBC in years, hopefully, this works)
Personally, I am curious as to the amount of revenue generated by optional items.
Yeah I double checked their latest earnings report but it’s filled with a lot of business buzzword crap and I couldnt find a breakdown of cash shop income.
But if it follows the trend of similar titles (there’s no reason to think it does t) and the difference is substantial between subs and cash shop
