I can’t find any written guides anymore, but there are still several video guides on YouTube. I started watching one and it made me so nostalgic, watching the SCH in cleric stance with 3+ DoTs going and Shadowflare up, hearing him talk about the debuffs and status effects tied to each move, and still healing with physick, Aldo, and fairy heals, and Aetherflow heals... Watching that has just reinforced for me how barren current SCH is.
I wish SE would re-release ARR or heavensward like Blizzard is releasing vanilla WoW. I’d sign up in a heartbeat.
Ugh, I hate videos.
The oldest text-based resource I found is from 18th June 2017—in other words, two days before Stormblood released, so it's updated for Stormblood, not Heavensward. But it does have the StB changes listed, so you can sort of figure out what it was like in Heavensward:

Based on this, the HW version doesn't honestly strike me as much more mitigation-based than StB/ShB scholar. So if that's what people mean by a mitigation-based healer, I imagine I'd be fine.
The only time it was truly mitigation based was back in ARR, when lustrate was our biggest direct heal and our only aoe heals were whispering dawn and succour. Indom by itself made SCH much more capable of direct healing, and we've only been getting more tools for direct healing since. I'm like both ARR SCH and HWD SCH. SB is where SCH started to go downhill for me.
