I'm referring to the title of the thread and the use of 'current year' to imply that it is somehow wrong of the development team to have taken the stance that they have.

I don't interpret it as 'wrong' so much as 'dated', which is as true as it is ironic when applied to a game that was once praised for not falling into the same, tired, gendered tropes a number of other MMOs fall under. Worse still is when you remember that one of Final Fantasy's most popular games features a particularly beloved scene in which the protagonist crossdresses.
Sexual fanservice is fine, but to make it work in something intended to have a broad appeal, it has to go both ways. I'm saying this as a hella gay woman that's super excited for glamazon bunny girls.
I actually completely disagree. For one, the calendar year has little to do with things. It's like year 6 of the current era in Eorzea... or something like that.
I advocate for more racial gear, more gendered gear. Gear that accentuates the body frame and is tailor made to the race. We aren't all the same, we shouldn't be wearing all the same (I say this while using a completely free to all glamour set lol).
If we can all get equal amounts, but unique gear, we end up with more variety overall. Seeing more variety used either as sets, or pieces of, will allow a much broader look to everyone as a whole.
People can feel a bit special wearing something someone else can't, while at the same time feeling envious over the gear their friend is wearing but they can't. Everyone loves both these things, feeling special and feeling upset! It's 2019 afterall.
So we can get better looking gear, tailor made to an individual. We can get more unique options to look at out into a crowd than if everyone just got the same stuff. This can't happen without more RSE, more gendered equipment, more uniqueness and less homogenization.
I'm kicking myself for not using this as an example.

And truthfully it isn't even entirely about sexual fanservice. It's just nice to have options, the flexibility to wear what you want and customize your character to your liking. To much options is always better than not enough I say ^_^
What you're asking for here is infinitely less reasonable when it comes to workload, nor does it offer further uniqueness when it limits options so severely (see: Black Desert's per-class outfits). There is no way SQX can consistently make unique gear for every race and gender in a game this huge. It's just not possible in a game of this magnitude.
At least OP and his little trusty sidekick are amusing. Can't wait for the expansion so these bored people can go play the game.
