check this read out, this actually sounds pretty awesome to me, i have lots of gils and would love to just buy game time with it so i can play for free. se should think about implementing this, it will help rid of some of the rmt, but most of all let us play for free.
td,lr of the link post is ...tera company is selling a item called chronoskulls, chronoskulls = 1month game time. you can then exchange these chronoskulls in game to other players for gold/gils. thus gils buyers would buy months of game time from the company instead of rmt, then just trade to players with lots of gils so they can just play for free. win win right? less i'm missing something sounds like a good idea they are doing. what u guys think or am i off on thinking it sounds like a good idea.
i agree but better us then them no? if it gonna happen right? seems like this is direction mmo's are going, from diablo3 and tera now too. but i do see your point, it's still rmt just the company is getting the money over rmt. i don't buy gil but i probably would rather give that money to some poor dude then se. still sounded nice to play for free lmao.
I'm neither for nor against this idea given the complexities involved in bringing this idea to a non-high-risk-PvP game, but...
I would like to point out that this idea is not new. 'Chronoscrolls' are, to all intents and purposes, exactly the same as the EVE Online's 'Pilot License Extentions', AKA 'PLEX'. An item that can be bought from CCP, then converted into an in-game item and sold for in-game money at a very steep price. It put a nasty dent in the RMT crowd and it funnels a significant chunk of the money RMT'ers would be making back to the developer. It also allows the developer to have some control over RMT'ing and control possible damage, and also further discredits unendorsed in-game money sellers.
EVE has had this system for years with little harm to game balance (and this is a sandbox PvP game with massive dependence on proper balance, it doesn't have the leeway of a mostly PvE job like Final Fantasy XIV), it can work. The trick is very much in balancing, you have to make the timecode items as expensive as possible to discourage people buying them willy-nilly, but not price so far above RMT'ers as to price yourself completely out of the market. They also have to be able to change the prices on the fly to reflect the prices of items in the game. For instance, with the way CCP have managed it, PLEX can perhaps fund a small fleet or so. But if you want to buy a Titan (compare: endgame/high grade PvP equipment?) you'd be spending in the region of a couple of thousand dollars.
Anyway that's the very brief version. More detail here or so:

They also don't require the implementation of a cash shop, and could be sold through the accounts site much as is Crysta, or account validation tokens.
All the same Square-Enix would certainly do well to watch TERA, and treat it as a way to test the viability of timecode trading in PvE-based MMO games. It certainly will need more care, given it's a lot less easy to waste money here than it is in EVE Online. In EVE, timecode trading worked particularly well because with the way resources there are so easily and permanently destroyed, it actually became a way to take money out of the economy as fast, if not faster, than it put money in.
EVE has an extremely complex economy and its gameplay blunts a lot of the drawbacks, plus they keep a professional economist on staff to balance this sort of thing. So while certainly worthwhile to consider it ought definitely be gone about with a great deal more care.
Also, pff, "Chronoskulls" >.>
I'm apparently old enough to be able to pay a couple bucks for something minor if it would help me regain motivation to play a game five years down the line. I understand the dilemma of people apparently having issues with their bank account or living check to check and I am truly sorry for those people, probably including yourself. I also didn't know about the barbershop, I think that is a great idea and hope they decide to truly push forward with it.
The items I stated were examples of things that a cash shop could list without it being considered broken because my belief that if for some reason SE DOES decide to include some sort of services like this that it shouldn't affect the gameplay of others.
