It's all good to Draw on FFXI's successes, but when people start posting asinine things like, "We should scrap the armoury system and go back to job/subjob.", it's kind of pathetic.

I absolutely despise everything you just mentioned about XI. Who the hell actually DID like that? And if they did, then ya, they should go the hell back to XI lol...The problem is, Haji, not that XI fans want different things than the anti-XI ppl. The problem is, that every time someone mentions XI, the handful of things you brought up, are always used as ammunition against a great idea (most of the time, ideas that have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the stuff you just brought up). That is why there is an endless number of threads bashing the stupidity, and the ignorant ranting, steaming from the whole of the anti-XI community.
In fact, that same "danger rush" feel of XI is the same thing that almost provoked a rage-quit from my brother and a few friends. I don't like it either. I sure as shit don't like camping Argus for some 30ish hours only to watch some douche run up and kill it 12 minutes into his arrival. So, please tell everyone who thinks "old-timers" from XI like that shit, that we do NOT like it at all.
Seriously you guys.../facepalm. If this was XI-2 there would be similar characters from XI in XIV. Oh wait there is Cid and the summons... Oh wait again just a sec, Cid and summons is also in other Final Fantasy titles! Oh snap! Wait but XIV Cid looks different.
Items, Cid, Summons, Magics, Abilities, Biggs and Wedge. That is as much or all the similarities XIV will have with the rest.
..Oh I forgot about Chocobo and Moogles.
Two words:
Pandemonium Warren
I agree with this. I think it should be more about small system things like a cleaned up party search system and /search commands or linkshell management basics that their previous installation had. Not system directly taken from XI itself. That is indeed pathetic.
In terms of the parallels, it's silly to not acknowledge them when they are already there. It's something that will always be there due to the games styling and instead of arguing that you should accept it. It was already executed (poorly) and now it's the art direction's and development's job to steer it away if they want this world to be accepted as a separate entity. Or tie it in or weave the two worlds together some way where it makes sense even on a high fantasy level.
Hydaelyn could be Vana'diel in another incredibly different dimension. Or Hydaelyn is really Vana'diel millions of years into the future where continents have grown or changed and the reason for that the races have evolved. Could even go straight science fiction and find out that you were once from Vana'diel and eventually your ancient ancestors had to leave that world and inhabit a new one that was forgotten through the many devastating umbral eras. It is said in the lore that there are many city ruins buried and forgotten due to these eras and are mostly forgotten about. There is so much that can be done to tie in the reasoning for these similarities.
Zombie Topics are fun ^^;;...........
Sure it needs to draw from a few elements of FFXI but then again it needs to draw from other games as well. Pull in other elements that make the game appealing to all and not just a very small group of individuals, well this is actually what Yoshi-P is doing and that's why I give mad props to that guy.
