You are so stuck on FFXI's HNM mechanics that you cannot see of any other method. Make the NM a guaranteed 21hr repop and you just eliminated the stupid pop window mechanic along with moving the HNM timewise.
Racing another LS is at least more engaging than playing the waiting game. And with a known pop time, racing would only happen if you overlap with other HNMs. As far as holding, rage timers were implemented for this reason.
You guys are also forgetting XIV doesn't share XI's claiming system nor is ARR going to share 1.0's loot system either. Yoshi already mentioned that people that help kill something will get rewarded too, to what extent is yet to be seen though.
It wouldn't be too different honestly. People that want to camp HNMs will show up at the start of the window. This number always fluctuates based on time zone, other events LS have planned, and how many people actually know the ToD. As for moving the NM rapidly though time zones, I can handle that if it means there is no silly waiting game. However, you also are going under the assumption that there would be a minimal amount of HNMs around. Add something like 20 HNMs and you'd be hard pressed to fight every single one of them along with doing instances in the day.

Tiamat racing was more fun than waiting so yes, I'd take that. When my ls would lose claim to a race, we'd leave a mule to get ToD and carry on with our day while still being ready to race back if the group would wipe. As far as rage mechanics, XI's rage mechanic was super tame. It would take an hour for it to rage and even then, it would be a slowly increasing rage. XIV "fixed" rage timer by making the mob automatically hit for max damage right as soon as it hit rage and by not making it a ridiculous 1hr.

Even from the standpoint of being in a HNM LS, I am very aware of NM fatigue. I have spent entire days doing the same menial tasks over and over, spawn condition variety would be great. From monopolizing Dodore and Uraeus, to alternating between AV and CC, NM fatigue does exist. We the players experience this fatigue.
All I want is SE to bring back some type of events like HNMs camping, Dynamis and Sky/Sea for us that hardcore players switching to FF14. Those kinda events to me where the best, not only because of it's competition and drama... HNM LS to me was where I would my virtual family and where I can find really dedicated players with skills.
Just an thought that throws back to an old FFVI idea combines two beloved concepts of instanced dungeons and NMs. Imagine an NM encounter that also serves as an instanced dungeon!
Now you maybe thinking, Asael... What the hell have you been smoking??? Well... That's not important. But anyways I was watching over some old lets plays of FFVI and one monster in particular just struck me as interesting and I thought it would be a very fascinating addition to FFXIV. The monster I speak of in this case is known as Zone Eater. What Zone Eater would do is if you sat idle long enough he would eat you, and after a quick loading screen (or possibly a CS in this case) you would find yourself inside a dungeon within the beast's gut. The dungeon itself could be considered the equivalent of AV or CC but yet could also serve as a major NM fight if you chose to just go all out against it.
If this still isn't clear you can always just google FFVI Zone Eater and you should get the idea.

I would also like to see HNMs in this game. I do agree that cutting down the respawn time and windows would be a good idea. Or even the random pop idea throughout an entire zone (similar to Sandworm and Dark Ixion) would be an awesome idea, as someone else said. It would make it so everyone has a chance at killing said nm and receiving whatever items it drops. Just please make it a challenge, not a time sink.
Also someone else had the idea of maybe when you find that HNM your group gets teleported to an instanced zone. I think that is an awesome idea. If this is implemented though, I think if they make the HNM pop at a random time in any zone, everyone who is in the party or alliance no matter where they are in the game should get ported to said zone, but I think before we are ported it should ask us "would you like to be teleported to this zone?". That way you don't have to wait 30 mins for everyone to gather together and if you choose to not participate you have a choice. This way you still have that competition of finding the HNM if multiple ls's are out looking for it but do not have to worry about someone stealing the hate due to how the claim system is.
Dark Ixion/Sandworm type spawn or "hunting" conditions so you have to compete, spawn times that give it some mystique and make the world feel alive, and only on harder content the rest of the NMs can be found in FATE. I think this is what the majority of people have been shouting since the first page. Get ready for B3 where we can make are voices heard on the other forums.
Spitballing here so bear with me. Wouldn't we all scream awesome if Nidhogg randomly attacked a city every 48~72 hours? It could start out as a FATE event where everyone/anyone can fight him off, then you have to chase him on your chocobo with the rest of your free company to his lair where you instance in. Any Free Company can instance in but he'd be extremely hard to beat with rare drops/drop rate etc. It eliminates the competition drama, still kinda gives the same affect.
