just a crazy idea: With the add of diving, why not adding mermaids as new player race?!
because the majority of the game is still on land, with a consistant walk speed. Can mermaids actually walk? The game could do the opposite and go all kingdom hearts on us (magic gives us mermaid tails when diving regardless of race), but I also don't see that happening.
Cool idea! I think it would be too hard to do, but it would have fit with the water-based areas. When Heavensward was announced, with flying mounts and vertically-built maps, somebody suggested a race of winged people. Of course that never came to pass, but I think it would have been neat. Heck, could have integrated that into the Au Ra concept. But I think having actual wings would have caused a lot of problems with clipping through armor, characters, the environment, etc.
Well, I can imagine that the mer-folk might still be able to stand upright or slither around like a naga or something. But even so, it would seem odd, not to mention it would be incompatible with so many clothing/armor items, especially boots and pants, and probably most chest items as well like robes or long dresses. Then you have certain actions like jumping, riding mounts, dance emotes, or job actions that involve kicks and the like. Even if solutions could be found for all this, it would be a ridiculous amount of work.
They're not really that much different from the Lamia race, who will be a Beastribe in Stormblood (so they will most likely never be playable because lore)

Showing support for both (but mainly tiny adorable Viera...).
That's it! We need a race of fishy people like Abe from Hellboy. That'd be freakin' awesome.
Many would die to play as Gria... (FFTA2)

Considering Sylphs can glamour themselves to take on the shape of 'walking ones,' any Beastman would be able to fit into society... so long as they remember to glamour into humans and don't draw attention to themselves by their odd choice in fashion (Noraxia).
Gria are pretty much Au Ra with wings, though :P
I'd rather see something new please! But I don't expect anything.

You dont need legs to move on land...
Yep, I have one fantasia on my retainer waiting to be used just in case viera ever do come out.
So I said I'd try drawing a landscape of what viera's homeland may look like in ffxiv, but I think I bit off more than I can chew. lol
Initially I wanted to draw something underground, but when thinking about what kind of area I would want to hang out and chill at, I thought I'd prefer a place where I could see the sky. With the addition of swimming in 4.0, I kinda wanted to draw this new city with the ability to swim in mind. So, if I ever finish this drawing, it will probably be heavily influenced by Venice.
I think I'll set the landscape drawing aside for a little bit and come back to it later. I am kind of interested in drawing a male viera, so I might do that later.
As a fan of FFTA and FFXI I support this thread. +1 for support
Never got a chance to play FFTA, but always wanted to try it. I like how viera are sort of a reoccurring race.
plz no more races, focus on race stories instead like make it worth like some kind of similar to beast tribe but its focus on what race and clan you choose the race origin you from.
Why not call it tribe Origins or somethin? lol
I found another viera pic:

This one isn't viera fan art, but it sorta looks like what a male viera could look like:

I'm still planning on drawing a male viera. I'll get around to it eventually.
Nice finds! I hope they make them with a desert/arctic theme, if they ever get made. :c Really hoping they do!
I'd like this, I love the fact that we are seeing Au ra lore in stormblood, it's just a shame that we have never seen it for roes or lalafells.
My biggest problem with Viera is that it would actively take away from Miqote storytelling, as they are both forest dwelling animal like races that are predominantly female and there will be a lot of overlap.
when they new raid return to ivalice was announce I was like come on bunnies!
Both are reclusive and hate outsiders (when within their clans), both live in forest habitats, both have animal features, both are a predominantly female species.
If we ever explore the Viera origin place, it would take away from exploring a Miqote origin place because they would functionally be the same
they are pretty coolios
Hah! I know that's a lie, because Roes aren't good at being not awesome. AND they're not very good at figuring out double negatives in sentences! It's okay though, headbutting actually hurts really bad so I'll spare you!
On topic, fully unaware of the content of the past 40 pages: for those who want Vieras, what new things do they add to the table? What do they bring that isn't already fulfilled by, say, the Miqote or Au Ra?
Something that isn't just different animal parts I hope. I mean, you could argue that they have a different culture from the others, say Southeast Asian or what have you. But all the lore in the world still has to still make them visually stand out that isn't just "bunny ears and/or long nails". IMO, of course. Again, not opposed to including them, I just want their addition to not feel tacked on. None of the other races have so far IMO.
I think I can get behind that. I was disappointed that the Au Ra didn't get the vicious/more feral look from their concept art. Might be why now I'm trying to figure out if I like Hyur Highlanders or Roes more.
Something tells me that those two are the only things we're gonna get for non cutesy/petite races. That and male Au Ra. By far the most popular types of races are...well, the most popular combinations are fem miqote and au ra, take that as you will. While the least popular are...well...
