You pretty much need to know when high voltage is coming and slap it about half a second before. By the time your eyes register the cast bar, its too late (connection dependent of course). In my opinion though your PLD should be the one silencing with the BRD. You lose way to much DPS using that silence rotation. Just because monks can silence doesn't mean we should. The risk is very high and the reward is low... If you have a pld and a bard which most coil groups seem to then they can do it easy. If you have two plds which many raid groups do that is even better.

I like to silence with my monk. I feel useful. But it's also because I cause too much enemity and can't dps properly (no dot and can't use 7 spell rotation); we use the left path in my FC, so I assign myself silence duty and sometimes ask for backup when I know I'll fail a silence, wich may occur 1 or two time during the fight. If I knew how to dps properly without causing that much inimity, I'd probably leave silence duty to brd+pal, but for know I do it and It works.

I am relatively uneducated in the ways of monk as I have only ever really done fates and job quests with it so I have been all around teh google machine trying to find a basic explanation of the bread and butter monk rotation. I found this and want to know what you guys think of it.

I prefer to have Fracture and Demolish in one combo because their duration is roughly the same (cross class Fracture is 15s vs. MRD's 30s!). I also start with the flank combo (+ToD), then go to the rear, so that the TS buff is up for Bootshine/true strike(if i use that one at all).

So DoT-wise it's ToD -> Demolish -> Fracture -> Demolish -> Fracture -> repeat. Be sure to not clip them though. I usually weave them in before or after Raptor form depending on the timer, or even postpone until Coeurl. It's up to the current situation, really. Unlike DRG, Monk doesn't really seem to have a rotation optimal in every case. (Does DRG even have something like a set rotation?)

Your bread and butter (BnB) rotation is Dragon Kick > Twin Snakes > Snap Punch. That is the core rotation. You replace Snap Punch with Demolish whenever the target does not have the DoT on it or it has run out.

Right off the bat you want to make sure you use Blood for Blood and Internal Release as your buffs on CD. You also want to use your 2 off-GCD attacks - Steel Peak and Howling Fist - on CD.

Throw Touch of Death anywhere in your BnB rotation if the target does not have the DoT on it or it has run out.

If the fight in question isn't very TP intensive (you don't have to worry about conserving TP) then first throw in Fracture whenever you can as well, similar to how you handle Touch of Death.

If you really want to maximize your DPS and don't have to worry about conserving TP, you can use Impulse Drive*.

General rule of thumb for skills such as Touch of Death, Fracture and Impulse Drive: be careful as these are not part of MNK's forms, and therefore need to be used with care to not lose GL3 stacks. After just refreshing GL3, you have 12s to get it back up. This means 6 skills with a 2s GCD. If GCD is above 2s, then 5 skills to be safe. Of those skills, 3 of them need to be your BnB rotation in order to get back to GL3, so you have 2-3 skills worth of time for Touch of Death, Fracture, and/or Impulse Drive.

Be mindful of mechanics in every fight. Anticipate if you will need to move soon, and in such cases forego using skills other than your BnB rotation in order to give yourself maximum time to refresh the stacks. If you will not need to move soon, use any of the extra skills as necessary.

When you need to burn something down with no regard for TP, and you've already applied Touch of Death and Fracture on the target, you can append 2-3 Impulse Drives to your BnB rotation depending on your cooldown.
( DK > TwS > SP > ID > ID > ID > DK > TwS ... etc)


* Keep in mind that Impulse Drive needs to be done from the rear. If not, it is a massive waste of TP and a net DPS loss.

Favor Crit Rating in your gear choices. Given a high crit rate, you can forego the use of Bootshine and stick to the BnB rotation that will allow you to stay on the targets flank, effectively minimizing your need for movement and risk of missing out on Auto Attack hits.

Pretty good advice overall except for this tidbit. You need roughly 60% crit rate for Dragonkick to be comparable to Bootshine - not really a reachable number.

Yep. You'll do more DPS if you don't hyper-stack crit, pick up some DTR, and use Bootshine as it was intended to be used.

Hey guys, first of all i'd like to say thanks to a lot of the people that have been posting in this thread. I've picked up quite a bit for my Monk while skimming over the most recent pages for the last week or so.

I have a few questions though :D

1. I want to ask about general movement when moving between the targets flank and behind, I was looking at my rotation on the training dummies and noticed i'm moving out of auto attack range pretty much constantly when using the w, a, s and d keys for movement.

I found locking onto the target (numpad 5) removed this problem but as it's fiddly to hit this key between mouse clicks and it poses it's own set of problems when bosses require lots of movement/positioning to avoid taking damage.

Any tips on this?

2. That damn DL subligar! I hate it :( Are the Peltast Breeches a good enough alternative? I'm pretty much full DL apart from the legs..

1.) There should be a legacy movement option for keyboard, try if that works better for you. Basically, it changes character movement to be relative to the camera. That's also how the gamepad works, and I'm not using lock on.

2.) You still have the alternative route of gryphonskin set. They're quite expensive tome-wise though, you need a crafter and only HQ will be on par with DL. Melding HQ puts you higher than DL but still below myth/allagan gear.
