Au Ra physiology and other lore.

It seems also that in this version of the benchmark you can't change the scale color, even though raen have been shown with coppery scales and xaela with inky blue. at least I didn't see it working on making my raen.

The vibrancy of the skin is rather surprising. You can get some fairly red and green skin tones for Raen while Xaela have more pronounced blue and purple shades. I was expecting one to tend to warm colours with the other leaning to cool colours, but the extent of which they do was a nice surprise.

Still sad over the horns and faces being connected, oh the conundrums.

Yeah, there's no way to mess with the scale coloration. While some renders and screenshots did show them with greater variation, it might not have made it into the benchmark, or maybe it was just a cut feature. The lore for the clans does describe their scales as "brilliant white" and "lustrous black," so either way I don't think changing the scale / horn color is going to be available upon release.

I was kind of disappointed facial and horn structures were linked too; fortunately, using Eye Type 3 typically overcomes the "cutefase" dilemma. Exception is Face Type 4, which makes it look downright menacing.

... and if there was any lingering doubt, no, Au Ra do not have ears; that's what their cranial projections are for. Make sure to punch Ilberd twice as hard for throwing you on the floor now!

A curious thing I noticed with male Au Ra, the scales for face three (? maybe three, it's the lower left option) appear detached from his face. Though looking at the lower right face, there's a bit of detachment happening as well. I'm rather unsure if it's intended or not, it seems more like a graphical oversight.

So for a race that has a demon-based background (instead of dragon), the females DO NOT look very demonic the same way the males can be made to, and that kind of upsets me. I get that SE wants to keep its player base happy with cutesy cat girl/waifish midlander faces and such, but come on, SE you could have given us at least one face option that could be made to look truly demonic and scary! (That one face option for the Xaela DOES NOT count). All it would really take is to add maybe a set of the femroe eyes & their eye shape options to the new Au Ra face options.

As it stands, the female Au Ras are just catgirls and midlanders with some scales and horns. Not good enough, SE! You can do better!

Exactly! I can make even a Midlander look fierce/scary (see headshot), or at least like you shouldn't mess with her, but I'm not sure that one Au Ra option will meet even that low bar.

For one they're not necessarily demonic but...

Limbal rings. Red eyes. Pick an unnatural skin tone, something greyish say. Pick the face with a deadened expression. Play around with the scale options till it suits you. And bingo, demon dragon girl.

Or demon peiste girl. Or whatever they are.

It is tough to overcome the cutefase with Auri women, but it can be done with a little effort, even if you don't go with Face Type 4 - Eye Type 3.

... okay I say a little, but it took the lion's share of my day that probably would have been better spent doing programming work. Still, I think I got it, even if it's still leaning a bit towards "cute." I'll post images if I get around to making a photodump or something.

I wish the eyes were less...droopy. I'd like a more bright-eyed bushy-tailed face (scaly tailed, shiny tailed?) or just an option to rotate the angle of the eyes like some other games have.

The eyes lack a good hilite or shine when the face is in shadow, combined with the droopy eyes it looks very deadpan to me.

Luckily though I think I have created a character that looks enough like the one I have that it will still feel like the same person after I racechange.

After tinkering in character creation, I figured out the easiest fix for my above issue (lack of fierce looking femras) is to make the eye itself black in the same way the male Xaela's eyes are. I have no idea why SE didn't do this in the first place. It's a tribal thing, not a gender thing, so the female Xaela's eyes should look similar to the male's.

How much variation does the Tail Length slider offer?

So how are people doing on the Au Ra eyes? The whole glowing ring is kind of nice but i find it hard to get something that doesn't look intrusive with them. like so.

OMG I love this design. Excellent use of outer ring color I just used black around one eye but that doesn't really make a creppy effect

Yeah i paint models and usually when doing different shades i want to start dark and work my way outwards to blend shades so I think the same principle works. Darker shade in the middle and then lighter shade for the outer ring.

Can I just say the right side picture really makes me think its a more humanized Sahagin? Not a bad thing but the face 2 (3? Pretty sure thats 2) horns on Xaela really make me think the Sahagin instead of Dragons or most Demons. Yours just really brings it out in a nice way.

Love this Au Ra female I made. Planning to keep her and change my main to her.

I'm not sure if it's a graphical oversight or it's supposed to be that way, but some of the facial scales on both Male Face 3 and 4 do seem to be a bit detached from the face. Perhaps it's their way of emulating beards?

Yeah, I always felt the horns on Female Face 2 were more akin to fins... just wanted to fiddle around with one of the less-used skin tones.

Anyway, this is probably something like what I'll Fantasia to when Heavensward releases. Still a bit cute, but serious enough to play the part of a heroine.

I just really like using lighter skin tones on Xaela. It makes their scales more pronounced, showing they're not just funny-looking Hyur but still human enough that you can identify with them. If that makes any sense.

Made a guy and gal of each tribe; they have some interesting color options. All the new hair is lovely, too:

I think overall I like the males more.

The males are really cool looking they seem huge too. For myself i prefer more cute characters but if i was going to create something that looks bad ass and powerful I'd love to go male Au Ra.

I cant decide on my female's horn/face, probably go with the first female though. Made a male too, just to see what I could come up with. I want the MALE hairstyle on my female...:( why is there so few hair styles for all races that dont have bangs? the Au Ra female have so many with bangs, makes me sad.

Print screen, open up Paint or something, then hit Ctrl + V to paste the image. Cut and crop as you like.

Alt+print screen will also keep it to your active window to lessen clutter to crop.

Thank you! I tried to keep my Au Ra looking as much like my existing character as I could. Though if I ever make an alt I could noodle with this thing all day. Just a bit sad I can't look at her with the glasses I usually glamour >.>
