I think not dying HAS something to do with player skill. Choosing the right people to play with is a skill too.
Of course not dying at all can be really hard sometimes. It depends on play style and who you are playing with.
Ive played FFXI, for at least 4 years. I remember back then it was my first MMO, it took months for me to grasp the game.
I died alot in the first 20 level, but after a whle i died less often.
It was frustrating at times, but for me it was part of the experience. Ive learned how to play over the course of dying alot.
I am not the best gamer so dying helped alot.
I think xp loss is just that little frustrating thing that makes you wonder how you can improve your play to not die that often.
Gear dmg does not do that imo.
But how can improve yourself, if dying is not in your control. As a Red Wizard, all I do is damage deal. I don't heal the tank. If he dies I am the one going down next. If it's a boss mob, unless it's 1 hit from death, there is no way to prevent myself from dying.
All an exp loss would do, is make me more of a jerk. I would help far less people if exp loss was in-game. So new players wanting to get stuff done, wouldn't get help. Therefore making a new player suffer.
So I would rather have damaged gear, than exp loss.
