What does it take to be considered a 'good' player?

What a loaded question. A good player is someone you wanna play with and that type of player varies from person to person. But the consensus is at least knows how to play, behaves well, and is actively participating. Personally I wouldn't put skill level as the top quality of a good player, but being considerate of others, you know, the attitude that actually makes playing a game with others playable.

Also, the funniest moments I had in duties were when players made mistakes. You'd hardly see that happen with very experienced players but fortunately they pull the weight of struggling party members. All these types of players make the game interesting. Just be a good sport and we're all good.

Onto the subject:

1) Show effort in whatever you do.
2) Don't be afraid to experiment with new abilities & skills
3) Don't talk down to those who are struggling in some form. You didn't start out as an endgamer any more than anyone else.
4) No, "git gud" (makes me ill just typing that bilge) does not pass for advice.

I find it rewarding, particularly if it's my main job, to first try to come up with my own rotation and see what is comfortable and seems to work well for the role. That can enable you to develop a practical understanding of the job skills and how they interact with each other, which is (for me at least) an interesting and enjoyable part of the game.

Regarding good players, the players I appreciate in PF and commend in DF:

1. Know how to hold hate, mitigate, and use cooldowns as tanks.
2. Keep people alive as a healer.
3. Do decent damage as DPS.
4. Execute battle mechanics correctly and avoid taking excessive damage.

and most importantly:

5. Are friendly and helpful without being overly critical.
6. Don't forget that it's a game that is supposed to be fun. ;-)

Because people dress up as asian as they want to be then say stuff like konichiwa etc, yeah some people even think they can speak fluent when they watch animes. To me thats a weeabo.

So here's MY Definition of a good player ultimately.

I've been playing....6-8 Months? Seems longer than that. As with any MMO I tend to be VERY friendly/forgiving with new players (newbies/sprouts etc). Why? My mentality is pay it forward. You never know what you'll get and having friends helps make the game better really.

As a habit I tended to stalk newbie's -just be friendly, heal, wave, clap/congratulate when they reach a level. etc.

I made a few friends...granted this one isn't a newbie - but she and a couple others got along great with me.

As a habit we would do various things and have fun. We mess up, make mistakes - but laugh and tough it out...and we got to be a really good team regardless.

She recently upgraded to a manor in lavender beds. Was clearing out her small house. As a new player I've been thinking about getting a house - not an easy thing to do these days. I have gil - but not enough.

So I teased - I'll take your house. ;)

They (her significant other) took me seriously. - 3 Days later they gave me the gil and bam - just like that - first time owner of a small house. Likely the drabbest one on the ward - but its a sense of accomplishment.

Why?

I asked that.

I was friendly, kind, patient, passionate about being a team. Go out of my way to help out. Make the game worthwhile when logging in. (Paraphrased)

You guys all go on about knowing your class your role...knowing your rotations...don't suck...don't do this...do this...do that.

I argue that's all good and fine..but it don't mean jack.....when it comes to common....kindness.

You want to be a good player?

Try being kind. You just might be surprised.

PS: Yes I realize I come across salty on some subjects - but I always give a benefit of a doubt....and I try to be very patient when it comes to new players. Bossy so called "experienced" players who ignore things and make snap judgement? Yeah...gloves come off. :) Example? A paladin joined our group for a roulette - kept losing aggro - I said "Be careful with aggro please :) " <exact words. - They took offense...and won't play with me it seems...their reply was "Should I Leave?" - I reiterated "No - just be careful :) " - People are offended at being educated....this is a hazard - but even then you have to try.
