5% of every transaction is lost to the ether, though (or is it the void?). So, yeah, some gil will actually be leaving the system. Will it be enough? Who knows?

Sure I will probably get flamed for this...In LOLmaplestory, a free mmo, people used to "scroll" items to get better stats. Although you can do it safely for a mediocre weapon or you can use "dark scrolls" that had the chance to destroy your weapon. On top of all that weapons had different ranges and stats. On weapon could have a +5 -5 range on its attack power. Obviously the +5 above its average were rare as hell and to lose due to "scrolling" was heartbreaking.
Because of this system it was an intricate and very fulfilling part of the game. Allowing people to go beyond the norm and create insane powerful weapons allowing for amazing customization. Besides its a good way to keep crafters in business and getting rid of excess materials and gear.
I'm all for it!
Ok, for the complaints about luck, consider this. Don't do it. Let the crafters do it. Obviously some people are really looking forward to this, predominately crafters I'd assume. You don't like luck? Ok. Save you're money. As you turn your items into materia, HQ or NQ, sell it.
Put the proceeds in a savings account with all the other money you've earned doing whatever, and when you have a nice stockpile, or VERY nice stockpile, go shopping in the market wards. You can search for the items you're interested in, and look around to see what works of art other people have created and what they're asking for. Then buy a 4 or 5 materia-ed gear.
It's still a long and tedious process as I'm sure people will ask for a LOT for these items, but at least you're not ever losing anything. Someone else, who enjoys it is. Have you nay-sayers even considered this? If you want specifications, find a professional crafter and put in a "work order;" negotiate over a price, and let him do his thing. In a week or maybe month depending on what you're asking for. Fork over the dough and enjoy the item you've been saving for.
On an extra note, I'm not a crafter, but it would be nice if the professional crafters had a way to sign their works of art that others will be drooling over. Then they'll know who to go to.
Some people compare Madruk Darkrune to God... I know he's badass but, he's no Madruk Darkrune.
that's only cause they game took a huge u turn, from launching absolutely not ready to revamping. if the game started like a complete mmo, by now we would have some real endgames and things like really good gear as goals, what else is there in a pve game but to gain better gears so that fights get easier so u can get everyone geared quicker, so u can be ready for the next batch of goodies. lol.
Seriously, we have to see this in action before judging it, based on multiple reasons.
For example, is adding material going to be difficult? Will it fail often, or will it be a hard task to complete? Is there going to be methods of giving the player bonuses for using certain materia combinations? Bonuses for crafting levels? Will the risk be worth losing the gear in the first place?
Until then, all theorycrafting and pre-whining is just too far-fetched and too unknown to really worry about.
