Sahagin were certainly in FFXI as well, though they were a vastly different model than they are now. Mamool Ja, Goblins, Giants, Tonberries, and Qiqirn are all ripped directly from XI, though they all act quite a bit different from their Vana'dielian counterparts (Except the giants!). Interestingly, Kobolds in FFXI were actually what were known as Weapons and you can see some vague similarities between the two (Mostly in the way they walk). Tonberries are quite different between XI and XIV. As are Morbols/Ochu.
I played XI from 2002 to 2013 and I personally love the fact that they're re-using FFXI models in FFXIV. They're not higher poly, but they do have better resolution, and they have subtle animation differences that improve the models in small ways, not the least of which is the improved lighting/shading engines (Which isn't the models directly, I know). I honestly wish they'd use more of the XI mobs. On the list of mobs I miss, in no particular order: Dhalmels, Rarabs, Crawlers, Orcs/Yagudo/Quadav, Light/Dark Elementals, Dolls, Pots, did I mention Rarabs?

I sure do miss the mage Quadav jerking off when they cast magic :( Then again, maybe not. Anyways, to be on topic, as many people have said that these copies are a part of nostalgia. Sure they can reuse character models. Why not? It doesn't bother me, and I like that they put them into this game. I would love to see Yagudo, Orcs, and Quadav in the game, but going against the other beastmen for territory. That would be very cool.
