Anyone Else Feel Betrayed?

Nope. Not one bit. I played the Beta just like you and continue to play it for what it is, not what it isn't. I loved playing a game called Descent. I really loved it's spin-off, Descent Freespace. Then ~13 years later SWTOR comes out with starfighter missions that are very similar to Freespace. I was intrigued. Now they've released Starfighter PVP and it completely feels like Freespace with afterburners, missle locks, and 3D flying. They're even developing bombers, and I'm willing to give those a go. However, I don't feel betrayed that SWTOR Starfighter isn't like Descent FreeSpace. They're both 3D-sim games but they're completely separate. That's what FFXIV is, a game that is completely separate from FF XI. They have similiarities, but that's all. You knew what the game was going in, and the team has delivered what it wants to give to its playerbase. There is no betrayal. Disappointment, maybe, but not betrayal.

Played FFXI for years and years, and while I loved it, it wouldn't have a place nowadays.

Things change, memories are there for a reason. Can't repeat the past, remember it with a bit of nostalgia while you build your future through your present.

This is something I have never understood. I played FFXI since NA launch and after many years found myself in the revolving door of cancelling my sub every few months and coming back.

When Abyssea was released it hooked me and I played for a solid 2 years and really enjoyed it. Abyssea in a way saved that game and it brought a lot of old friends and players back into the fold.

That expansion alone is why Yoshi P landed the FFXIV gig to begin with.

I think it was pretty foolish to have any expectations of what this game was going to be after a new Producer/Director got a hold of it.

I can tell you one thing: if this game was remade in old school FFXI's visage I would not be playing it. I simply just don't have the time anymore. I started playing 1.0 with the hopes that it was going to be a Final Fantasy MMO with some more modern conventions, but that game ended up being a jumbled mess. I only stayed with it, with numerous breaks in between content patches, simply because of the group of people I was playing with. If I were playing it solo I'm not so sure I would have even given this game a second look.

Yoshi-P has made this game to attract the largest amount of players as possible. It has many elements that are accessible to everyone while still maintaining some harder content to please those who always want to be on the cutting edge of things. 2.2 and onward is going to be the true testament to what this game as about because 2.1 was a catch up patch. Chances are if you don't like what 2.2 has to offer you're just simply not going to like the game.

So then you quit right around the time ToAU was out then, possibly when it ended. Never even saw WotG. I stuck with it for 9 years, right up until level 95 patch. Even Abyssea, "easy mode" as it was with Atma required a surprisingly fun amount of strategy (also a lot of trail and error). We don't have enfeebling magic anywhere near on the level that we did in XI (or protective magic for that matter).

WHM can't AoE Benediction anymore, or actively prevent/reduce elemental damage and status ailments like in XI. The only real debuff we have is Slow from DRG, and it's a complete joke - most NM are outright immune and it doesn't really slow down attacks all that much anyway. By the time I left XI, RDM had a pretty insane arsenal of enfeebling magic available to it, as did BRD & BLU and others (and some of these stacked which was the craziest part - having a RDM & BRD stack Slow 2 and Elegy was ridiculous)


That's another thing, Bard is just so ... weird in this game. It's like the devs couldn't make up their mind if they wanted Ranger or Bard and half-assed the 2 together. Bard may have been fairly weak in XI in terms of damage potential, but it more than made up for it with Minuet & March. Even in 1.23 songs were fairly decent, especially the TP one. Now it drains MP, they have to be in range of the targets and since TP recovers automatically (and DRG & MNK can both use Invigorate) that song's pretty much garbage. I've yet to see an instance where Requiem is worth the dps penalty, which pretty much just leaves Ballad which again only healers really need as BLM & SMN have nigh-infinite MP. That leaves us with ghetto Ranger that can potentially get out DPS by a well-geared WAR. If BRD didn't also have Silence I doubt it'd get used for much besides Ballad. Why doesn't it have a DET/Crit buff song?!

Pretty much all the skills, spells, and abilities in this game are simple minded. They pretty much build all the new MMOs the exact same way now. Classes and abilities are so dumbed down to make the casual people happy. I was hoping the bard would have been a hybrid support class but when I got into the game and saw how they made it, I was pretty let down. I hate to sound like some old man talking to kids but really, they just don't build them like they used to. IMO the new generation of console casuals have ruined the genre. It just isn't the same anymore.

You pretty much explained the players of this generation and their perspective of what "hard" is.

Lord zlatan I know where you are coming from I made the same complaint in another thread and somebody tried to argue with me that ff11 only had 1 viable cookie cuttersub and that having a few cross class abilities was the same thing...
I dididn't even bother arguing as they're clueless
Ff11 had limitations to the sub job but you could stilll do some cool stuff
