FFXIV =/= FFXI
How are you so late on this, we've know arc=brd for months now, if you need explanation maybe you should look and see BARDS don't use HARPS in this game, since there will be no job specific weapons, brds will be using bows, even after that the weapon advertised is like a bow-harp, more bow than instrument. Please check concept art readily available and the new job weaponskill video on youtube before posting something everyone already knows.
Since SE needed another support class and ARC was the only one that even remotely made sense compared to what was left.
(I'm going to be a bit straight-forward with my answer here. But don't take this as a flame or a personal assault.)
Bards are musicians, yes. But I don't recall there being a rule that states bards can't be archers or whatever. Let's be honest here, a bard could be anything besides being someone to spread tales through music. S/he could be a monk, swordsman, mage. S-E simply decided to make it an archer this time. With the nifty tool of carrying a harp that can change into a bow.
And as far as I can tell, yes this is a final fantasy game. And no, this isn't final fantasy XI
Oh I see , well I knew arc unlocked bard I just thought it was strange that arc would unlock bard but didn't think much of it until I watched the new job weapon skills and wondered why they showing arc and then realised it was the bard and I was like wtf ?? Any how I find it very strange that a Mage job Is now more a mele jon
Taken from the Final Fantasy wiki:
Bard
Bards (吟遊詩人 Gin'yūshijin?) use songs to cause effects, often buffing the party or debuffing the opposition via the Sing command.[4][12][35] They generally equip harps as weapons
in FFXIV bard use harps.
It just happens that FFXIV is badass enough to make bows transform into harps and back again depending on the abilites used.
Because a bow is a harp with one string
Because you're used to the idea that bards are FFXI bards.
D&D bards use swords, daggers, bows AND spells in addition to songs and war cries. They're also experienced thieves.
There isn't a single definition of what a bard does, besides songs.
Traditional bards in D&D leveled skills of fighters and theives so the use of a bow is not strange at all.
As I said before Yoshi-P must have got the bard/arc thing from DQ, and before now SE has had an pretty lame brd build until now fighting with a harp was always kinda....lame?
slappn the bass mon
they should have made a thief class and have the storyline as the "redeemed" thf that loves music and bam, BRD job is made~!
In White knight chronicles the bow skill has songs to restore mp, a little hp etc, so its not a new idea for bard and archer to be linked.
Just thought I would throw that in here.
Wasn't Edward in FFIV able to equip a bow?
Since a week from now.
Since musketeer is in limbo, archer made sense to them. (no El Mariachi in XIV)
Bard can use anything. Proof right here.

I would prefer it if my Bard could charm pets
and cast shadows
without even using a sj
Archers becoming bards has been the natural order of things for over a decade!

You're awesome if you know the reference :)
It seems like an oxymoron because Archers (from what I've seen) try to stay stealth like and quiet...hiding in the trees or staying far back then shooting their enemy out of no where (they don't really try to draw attention to themselves lol like HAY GAIZ IM OVER HERE NOW IMA SHOOT YOOOU) vs bards who are entertainers...they are supposed to be the center of attention, playing loud music and letting their presence known...so yeah I have no idea...
bard = music ! nothing else is in stone.
All of the firsts Bard in Video game do shoot arrow, but until much later do they take one in the knee.
They could do a Bard DMC3 style, swinging Guitar like an Axe.
You are confused that BRD will be the only job for ARC, there are plans to expand jobs per class. Also Archers do not always try to stay hidden and quiet, what's with firing flaming arrow in the middle of the night and all...
The quiver can be a flute.

This may come to a surprise to the OP and a few others, but this and other similar discussion have already transpired is the archer forums. I know, I know, what kind of fools actually puts threads in there appropriate sections right? I mean I can't say I blame the OP for not knowing that. I mean what kind of person would actually even bother to check the ARC section to post and discuss ARC's. Thats just cray right?
bows are not uncommon as said for bards to wield, 2 straight from the top of my head that I can think of is Edward from FFIV and Leliana from Dragon Age both used bows
As many already stated, bards aren't just singers, but fighters as well. In the western folklore, bards have ofted bows or daggers, so forget the ffxi's bard this time, at least until they're using the mandolin fighting style (i know, i put this video in every topic like this, but it work)
The bard !
Bards in other games and books (A Song of Ice and Fire for example) use daggers, axes and other weapons, so it makes sense for one to use a bow.
As for the "This isn't Final Fantasy XI!" argument, I know of a certain Spoony Bard who used only instruments as weapons and I believe other Bards in other FF games only used music as weapons instead of actual weapons, and last I checked this is a Final Fantasy title. Final Fantasy Bards.
This thread AGAIN? I could have sworn there was a thread before with this exact same title.
Anyway, Archer to Bard actually makes sense to me. Bard is mostly a support role, they give out the song buffs and all. It would make sense to give that role to a class with a ranged attack, since they'll be moving around the battlefield and often out of melee range of the enemies. Making a ranged support job is really the best way to do it since their range allows them to move freely where they are needed.
Thancred is a bard and uses throwing knives. :o
I wanna see bards hitting the mobs with a banjo.
