Jig Lag (An Issue that needs to be adressed in the future)

My propose for posting this is to make this issue have a little more public face time.
It's something that gets buried under all the bigger problems in the game and might get forgotten in the process. Somebody else did a great job posting an explanation of this so I will use that post.

For someone familiar with the other 2 DoL classes, this can seem a lot like DoL Fatigue, but there is one key difference. Fatigue will damage the fish, and auto-fail from a single jig. Jig lag will auto-fail, but you will not recieve a damage fish message from that same jig. (Note: If your lag is not completely debilitating, you can damage a fish on one jig, then fail to jig lag on the other actions. This is different then the fatigue damaged fish message from the same jig action)




So that is the basic information.
Jig lag can be VERY frustrating, and depending on your ISP/SE Server can be very uncommon, or a regular/daily occurance. Unfortunately, only cause #4 can be resolved immediately. All other causes are outside your immediate control.

So, if you are having fishing troubles consider this as the possible cause.

I consider the ability of rather simple internet lag to cause this problem a bug, and eventually hope SE will resolve the issue, which is as simple as extending the jig timer. For realism, it is fine to keep a timer like this in place, in contrast with the other DoL classes, but it really should be set to a duration that does not come into play so often for the average player.

The addition of an appropriate error message stating that the players response was to slow, should also be implemented.

it's actually a two fold thing. In alpha b1/b2 I had no problems fishing but Mining and gathering were unusable.
starting in OBT I couldn't catch a fish but could do all the gathering and mining I wanted. each instance it was what
is called jig lag. jig then fail or swing then fail.

I no the problem is my slow ass internet because I'm on satellite but really for what we are doing these timers shouldn't be there or atleast be set higher as to not cut a part of the game out for people with higher ping times.

I really hope they fig that whole timer issue. I missed being able to fish. it was such a fun pass time back in early beta.
there wasn't a whole lot to do back then back just running around La Noscea fishing to pass time while waiting for leve timers made it bearable.

While not entirely a "fix" doing something to reduce your UI lag can give you a few more seconds on your jig. I had been running at all settings at max, with no AA, no Ambient Occlusion. I changed my General Draw Quality to 8 (from 10) and turned on 16x QCSAA. Even though I turned on AA, reducing general draw quality reduced the overall lag by so much that fishing became much more responsive. Specifically, I gained an apparent 4seconds or so v. jig lag, and when I press enter, the little ball going back and forth stops instantly instead of a couple seconds later.

So not a fix, per se, but a way to get an extra one or two seconds, or if your lucky, maybe up to four like me.

Now I had major problems with the jig meter being unresponsive and stopping well after I hit enter in early beta. I did upgrade my graphic card and that problem did go away. so yes what your saying is true, my connection is really the problem right now. however I am going to try your fix because I have never tried cranking AA like that. If that does indeed work. would really suck having to change graphic's settings just to fish. I wouldn't however be that bothered by it if we could change graphic settings in game or atleast at the title screen. That would be far better then logging all the way out.

That's what I thought at first, but as I didn't play with AA before, dropping just one graphic setting and cranking AA gave me the appearance of being better graphics. I stumbled into it after reading about the toll that General Draw Quality takes on the GPUs. I also got about a 10 degree C drop in GPU temp, and is the actual reason I made the change. When I noticed the loss of lag in the UI, I returned to my old settings to confirm it, and sure enough, the UI was extremely unresponsive again. To put it in perspective, I'm using an i5, 4gb RAM, GTX460 768mb GDDR5, so I at least WAS pushing the extreme edge of what my computer can handle before I dropped general draw quality.

Ok I am seing a massive increses in animation speed. My normal setting is 1600x1024 windowed general 8 background 4 AA 2x , and depth of feild. I haven't got to a node that I can fish yet ut i'll let you know. I dropped to 5 general 3 background 8xAA and depth of feild off. looks like crap but animation is faster.

Naw still does the second jig, remainder bar goes to zero. I did however have to get pass a string of catch on first jig.

But i'll give you my background on my pc also while i'm thinking about it. Amd dual core 64bit with win764, 4gb. Ati 5770 1gb GDDR5. This is looking to be connection related and there's no reason SE needs to have a fishing mini game to have such a short timer for response from clients.

While it can be handy to fail out of hooking an item, imo the system is just to sensative to NA lag, even if you are using highspeed,

I'm sure the JP's with great ping to the game servers themselves are wondering what we are even talking about.

Currently sitting at 50/50/42 in fishing, on my goal to get all 50's DoL, and jig lag is one of the major reasons I have not played in over a month. Grade 6-10 fishing being absolutely gay as a method to grind to R50 as well, is a major cause.

I realize a DoL main player is in the minority, but the entire game was easy to walk away from when the servers went offline, and a newly released game was fresh to get picked up.
