I just want to know if the new crafted 710 gear (after pentamelding) is better than the new tomestone 720 gear. I want to min/max my gear to the best of my ability because I want to try savage raiding even though I am new to it. I saved up lots of materia and I know tons of materia gets poofed in the overmeld process. It's not going to stop me from trying.
Higher ilevel is better in the overwhelming majority of cases. There are some extreme edge cases where lower ilevel pieces are favored to avoid undesirable substats but this tends to be on accessories.
Pentamelded crafted gear is typically used in whatever slots for which you don’t yet have tome gear or Savage gear, and is replaced over time as you get more clears.
720 tome gear takes a while to get due to the weekly cap. It’s something that you acquire over several weeks. In the end, BiS is a combination of augmented tome gear and Savage gear. You can’t go wrong with a full set of pentamelded crafted gear to begin with. It is meant to begin the new savage tier. You can also mix and match crafted/ex/normal raid gear to begin with depending on stats. You can find recommendations for each job on the Balance discord, the Icy Veins site also has some .
