Gathering for leathers
So i noticed to level up the disciples of the hand we have a gatherer we can use to provide resources for it, so why not have the same for leatherworkers, WoW has skining which provides leathers by skining the mobs, you use skin and you get some resources for leatherworking, so why not the same in ff 14, rellying on a random drop chance just by killing mobs to gather a big amount of hides is a bit annoying and time consuming! Gives us skining i say xD!

this is what retainer ventures are for.

DOW retainers can go hunting and get you monster drops. In ShB you can also trade gemstones for some skins

Long, long ago in 1.x there was a shepherd class but only in the .dats. It was assumed that this would be the wool and skin gathering job but it was never implemented.
The guild hall still exists today in CCH.

Pure speculation, but I think they nixed the Shepherd class because it was a combination of being too narrow in scope (e.g. do you only have domestic animal skins in game or do you come up with some off the wall explanation for why Shepherds farm up dragonskin and the like) and being easily covered as a resource by a combination of combat and retainers.
It's sort of the same deal with fishing, but that had a history in game and fishing is commonly in games anyway.

There are 17 jobs in the game (18 if you count Blue Mage) that are already capable of gathering hides, fleece, etc. We don't need another one.
If you can't be bothered to do it yourself, then you're able to buy off the marketboard from players who have extra they don't want.
If your concern is the drop rate, then mention that to Square Enix. Drop rates can be adjusted if SE is convinced there is a need.

Only in FF14 would players argue against immersion or mobs actually having decent drops, in favor of clicking a menu once per hour on your retainer while you afk.

I had a convo like this in my FC's discord and someone talked about maybe a trapper class, which sounds neat to me. Though I guess that would then beg the question of how we'd go about trapping something like literal dragons for skins, lol. I personally wish we could have something like WoW's skinning knives, but the WoW skinning systems works a tad differently iirc (or at least, I've only ever done skinning in vanilla content so I don't know if it's different for later expacs). It was pretty rng whether you'd get actual leather or just the scraps that you'd then have to craft into full leather, depending on how high a level you are, and with how much more involved gathering and crafting are in FFXIV....hmm, we're probably going to either still be stuck with rng except with more useless leftovers and worst case scenario, our retainers could end up just bringing us the useless leftovers. So it's a big HMMM for me on how such a class would work, as much as I'd kill for one.
Maybe we could have a Limited Hunter class? Something like that. I've seen talk around here about Beastmaster being a possible Limited class, so maybe that could be our source of leather and make a less useless Limited class than BLU, lol, as much as I like BLU,
